[[Category:{{{type1}}}-type Pokémon|{{{ndex}}}]] Staraptor (Japanese: ムクホーク Mukuhawk) is a dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.

It evolves from Staravia starting at level 34. It is the final form of Starly.

Biology

Physiology

Staraptor bears a resemblance to a cross between a large gray and white starling and a hawk. It also shares similarities with the harpy eagle. The "M" on the center of its chest resembles the first letter of its Japanese name (Mukuhawk). The downward crest on its head makes it appear larger in order to frighten its enemies.

Gender differences

A female has a smaller white spot on its forehead.

Special abilities

Staraptor have enough strength to carry a person on its back and fly to distant places. They can also fly at very high speeds, presumably around the speed of other fully-evolved Template:Type2 Pokémon such as Pidgeot or Swellow.

Behavior

Staraptor are highly aggressive and dangerous Template:Type2 bird Pokémon. They often live alone, or with a mate. They are found during the day often soaring high in the sky searching for prey below. In the mornings and the evenings, they are found at their favorite roost, preening or eating their catch. At night, they roost high in their favorite trees.

Habitat

Staraptor live in an array of habitats including open forest, grassland, wetland, mountains, and coniferous forests.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Staraptor have the strength and the stamina to capture and eat prey larger than itself. They usually pursue their prey in the forest using their maneuverability. Despite its predatory nature, it's occasionally found with the Yache Berry.

A Staraptor belonging to Reggie appeared in Lost Leader Strategy! and taught Ash's Staravia Brave Bird. It made a brief cameo in Aiding the Enemy and in Saving the World From Ruins!.

After J dropped Ash out of her airship in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part Two, he was saved by a Staraptor that Kellyn had captured with his Capture Styler.

Barry used a Staraptor in a battle against Ash's Chimchar in Barry's Busting Out All Over!. It appeared again in Steeling Peace of Mind!.

Ash's Staravia evolved into Staraptor in the final round against Paul's Honchkrow during the PokéRinger competition in Pursuing a Lofty Goal!.

Trivia

  • Staraptor has the highest Attack stat of all dual-type Normal/Flying Pokémon.
  • Staraptor and Zangoose are the only non-Template:Type2s to naturally learn Close Combat. Rather than punching, Staraptor uses its talons and beak to tear and peck its foe.
  • Its ability to use Close Combat is reminiscent of cock fighting.
  • It's Pokédex color is Brown, despite being colored gray. Interestingly, its shiny version is brown.

Origin

Staraptor is based on the white-cheeked starling, a common species of bird found throughout Asia. It seems to draw some inspiration from hawks, in particular its predatory nature. It also strongly resembles a rooster.

Name origin

Starling and raptor, which refers to predatory birds. Mukuhawk is derived from 椋鳥 mukudori, gray starling, and the English word hawk.

In other languages

  • German: Staraptor
  • French: Etouraptor - From étourneau (starling) and raptor.
  • Korean: 찌르호크 Jjireuhawk
