Spiritomb (Japanese: ミカルゲ Mikaruge) is a dual-type Ghost/Dark Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Spiritomb resembles a swirling, purple vortex. Green orbs that vary in size circle its face. It has a green, zigzag mouth and two green eyes shaped like half-crescents. Both eyes have spiral-shaped pupils, but often only one is shown which may indicate a 3/4 view of the creature. Spiritomb is attached to a light-brown/gray stone, the Odd Keystone, in which it was trapped after doing bad deeds 500 years ago. It is apparently composed of 108 separate, yet bound-together, malevolent spirits.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Spiritomb's abilities are similar to its fellow Dark/Ghost type, Sableye. However, Spiritomb is much stronger than Sableye both offensively and defensively, albeit slightly slower. Spiritomb's movepool lacks most of Sableye's attacking options. However, Spiritomb can use Hyper Beam and Giga Impact, Hypnosis and Dream Eater, Destiny Bond, Imprison, Grudge, and Ominous Wind. Like most Ghost types, it can also use Will-O-Wisp. Like Sableye, Spiritomb also has no type weaknesses unless subjected to Foresight, Odor Sleuth, or the move user has the Ability Scrappy. Spiritomb is immune to Psychic-type energies unless the user is under the effect of Miracle Eye.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was shown to be able to warp from one Odd Keystone to another, so it might be possible that it might be linked to more than one Odd Keystone.

Behavior

Spiritomb are thought to be evil Pokémon. They tend to go on destructive rampages like Gyarados. It is said to act as a hive-mind, with all of the souls that comprise it acting in unison towards the same goal.

Habitat

Spiritomb are entrapped in Odd Keystones and must be brought to the Hallowed Tower to be awakened. Some, as indicated in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, also live in caves.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

A Spiritomb first appeared under the ownership of Cynthia in Vs. Roserade II, and helped Platinum train for her upcoming Gym challenge against Gardenia. With its psychic abilities, it was able to seal Tru's Razor Leaf attack alongside Prinplup's water attack, and used them to save Rad Rickshaw, inadvertently getting Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum a set of bicycles. Spiritomb was later used against Cyrus, where it defeated his Honchkrow, but was then defeated by Weavile.

Trivia

  • Spiritomb is the second out of five Pokémon in National Pokédex order to have no weakness, the others being Sableye, Tynamo, Eelektrik, and Eelektross (excluding when under the effects of Odor Sleuth or Foresight).
  • Spiritomb has been shown levitating, but cannot have the Ability.
  • In Pokémon Diamond, Spiritomb's entry states that it was formed from 108 spirits, Spiritomb's number in the Sinnoh Pokédex is 108, its Defense and Special Defense base values are 108, and it weighs exactly 108.0 kilograms. It also explicitly states this in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, when it shouts "We are SPIRITOMB! We are made from a fusion of spirits! One hundred and EIGHT of them!" This is based on the number of temptations a person must overcome to reach Nirvana in Buddhism, implying that Spiritomb couldn't resist the temptations, so was bound to Odd Keystone.
  • All methods of obtaining Spiritomb in the main games (discounting breeding) involve connecting with another device (another player's Nintendo DS, the Pokéwalker, or Pokémon Global Link).
  • All of Spiritomb's Pokédex entries mention the fact that it is bound to the Odd Keystone.

Origin

Spiritomb is based on a Jibakurei, a spirit bound to a single place. It is also based on a Buddhist tradition performed on New Year's Eve in Japan. A bell is rung 108 times to chase away the 108 temptations in order to achieve Nirvana. The wisps of spirits surrounding its face also resemble a set of prayer beads, a possible reference to Japa. It may also be based on a crystal ball.

Name origin

Spiritomb is a combination of spirit and tomb.

Mikaruge may be a combination of 甕 mika (jar or urn, referring to it being a container of souls) and 軽石 karuishi (pumice) or 御影石 mikageishi (granite; both refer to its base, the Odd Keystone).
