The name 'spinner' comes from the fact that the player is spun around while traveling.

A spinner is a phrase used to describe a certain tile featured in Pokémon Red and Blue, Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Pokémon Platinum and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. The official name for this tile, if there is one, is unknown. This tile, when stepped upon, will whisk the player in the direction of the arrows depicted on it. The player will continue to travel in that direction until they hit a wall, land on another spinner (which may send them in a different direction) or land on a Stopper, a tile only used for that purpose. The name 'spinner' comes from the fact that the player is spun around while traveling.

Spinners are generally associated with that of Team Rocket, and are first found in the Rocket Hideout, where they form a complex maze that the player must work out to continue to the other levels. Other places involving Team Rocket include the Rocket Warehouse in FireRed/LeafGreen, and the Viridian Gym, which is run by the Team Rocket Boss Giovanni.

They also appear in Hoenn, in the Trick House and in the Mossdeep Gym (excluding Emerald), and in Sinnoh, inside the Fuego Ironworks. The Viridian City Gym in Kanto also continues to use spinners in HeartGold and SoulSilver, as it did when Giovanni was Gym Leader, despite Blue taking the Gym Leader's title in Generations II and IV.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Yellow, when the player is spun on the tiles, the Pikachu spins with them.
  • In Generation I, while the player is spinning, the arrows on the tiles move.
  • In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum there are no longer stoppers, and the player will spin until he/she hits a wall. Hypothetically, if one uses a walk through walls cheat in one of these games and steps on a spinner, they'll keep spinning through solid objects and infinitely into the Mystery Zone until they either turn off the code or the game or go too far out of boundaries, causing the game to freeze.
