Trivia

  • Spinarak is the only Pokémon capable of learning SonicBoom through breeding in every Generation.
  • Despite its name and resemblance to the spider, Spinarak lacks the 8 legs required to be a true arachnid.
  • Spinarak and its evolution Ariados are the only Template:Type2 Pokémon that can learn Night Shade.
  • Spinarak was originally purple in Gold and Silver games. This is not the case in Crystal and later generations.
    • However, its original Ken Sugimori artwork is green. This may be due to its only appearing at night.

Origin

Spinarak was created through a children's Pokémon design activity in the American TCG League.

In particular, Spinarak shares coloring and appearance with the Happy Face Spider, an arachnid from Hawaii that seems to have a face on its abdomen.

The Japanese believe that a spider can ensnare careless travelers.

Name origin

Spinarak's name is a combination of spinneret, which is where a spider excretes silk from, and arachnid. Itomaru could be a combination of 糸 ito, thread, and 丸 maru, circle, or a shortening of 巻き上がる makiagaru, to roll up.
