Spike Chunsoft
Chunsoft (Japanese: チュンソフト Chunsoft), now Spike Chunsoft (Japanese: スパイク・チュンソフト), is a Japanese video game developer specializing in console RPGs. It was founded by Koichi Nakamura, a video game designer from Enix. They are known in the Pokémon community as the developers of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. They have also developed for other series such as Dragon Quest and Sound Novels. It also made the highly critically acclaimed Nintendo DS game 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. Its name is taken from Chun, a character that appeared in Enix's very first video game, Door Door.
Gameplay formula of the Mystery Dungeon series of games
The gameplay formula can be seen in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, where the dungeons are randomized each time they are entered, and standard attacks cost nothing, while Moves cost PP. There are also various traps hidden that cause a multitude of effects, ranging from status aliments to damage.
Criticism
The repetitive nature of the games has led to some criticism. While Chunsoft has, indeed, created several games for many famous franchises (including Final Fantasy's Chocobo's Dungeon), not once has it even slightly changed the formula shown above. This leads to several critics saying that the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series is "just another Mystery Dungeon game with Pokémon characters slapped on".
Merger and rename
In April 1, 2012, Chunsoft was merged with Spike, and the company name is now Spike Chunsoft. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is the first Pokémon Mystery Dungeon title developed and published after the company merger.
