Biology
Physiology
Spheal is a chubby, spherical, seal-like Pokémon with a short, flat tail. Its plushy fur is light blue with several white spots of various sizes on its back. This covering of fluffy fur, combined with the layer of blubber underneath, retains heat and protects Spheal from the cold. It has black, circular eyes; small tusks protruding from its upper jaw; and small, rounded ears. Its stubby flippers and its underside are both beige.
Spheal are round, baby seal-like Pokémon. Their plushy fur is a baby blue color, with several white spots on its back and a beige underside. They have circular eyes, small tusks protruding from their upper jaw, stubby ears, beige flippers and a little flat tail. Curiously, its rounded, spherical appearance makes it bear resemblance to a balloon, or a ball.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
When it is happy or cheerful, such as when eating in a group, this Pokémon will clap its fins. The mealtimes of Spheal have been described as noisy as a result. Because its body is poorly shaped for swimming and can only walk slowly, it moves primarily by rolling across ice floes. This Pokémon lives in and around the List of Pokémon by habitat. Spheal also lives on any drift ice that comes near the shore in order to avoid predators. Spheal are often juggled by its evolved form Sealeo, which does so to check the former's health. When a Spheal finds prey while drifting at sea, it will inform the Walrein leader of its herd on where to find the prey.
Spheal, and its evolution family, Sealeo and Walrein, are the only known Pokémon that can learn Ice Ball by level.

Behavior
Prior to Generation VI, Ice Ball was its signature move, but other Pokémon could still inherit it via breeding.

Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body, for it is much faster than walking and because its body is poorly shaped for swimming. Despite this, it may dive into the sea, in which case its fur keeps it from feeling cold. When groups of Spheal eat, they all clap at once to show their pleasure. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.
Evolution
Spheal evolves into Sealeo, which evolves into Walrein.

Habitat
In Generation IV, Spheal is exclusive to Pokémon Pearl, while Seel is exclusive to Pokémon Diamond, with both found in the same locations in their respective versions. Additionally, both can only be obtained by breeding their evolved forms in Pokémon Platinum. Both Pokémon also appear to be based on Pinnipeds.

Spheal (Japanese: タマザラシ Tamazarashi) is a dual-type Ice/Water Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves into Sealeo starting at level 32, which evolves into Walrein starting at level 44.

Biology

Spheal is a chubby, spherical, seal-like Pokémon with a short, flat tail. Its plushy fur is light blue with several white spots of various sizes on its back. This covering of fluffy fur, combined with the layer of blubber underneath, retains heat and protects Spheal from the cold. It has black, circular eyes; small tusks protruding from its upper jaw; and small, rounded ears. Its stubby flippers and its underside are both beige.

When it is happy or cheerful, such as when eating in a group, this Pokémon will clap its fins. The mealtimes of Spheal have been described as noisy as a result. Because its body is poorly shaped for swimming and can only walk slowly, it moves primarily by rolling across ice floes. This Pokémon lives in and around the sea.

Prior to Generation VI, Ice Ball was its signature move, but other Pokémon could still inherit it via breeding.

Evolution

Spheal evolves into Sealeo, which evolves into Walrein.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

NPC appearances

 • Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: Spheal stars in the Bonus Field Whiscash or Pelipper takes the player to. They will swim in the pool and occasionally try to climb up the ice slide. Hitting a Spheal at this time will send it to a Sealeo's nose, earning five times the points from just bouncing the Poké Ball.

Pokédex entries

Ruby Spheal is much faster rolling than walking to get around. When groups of this Pokémon eat, they all clap at once to show their pleasure. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.
Sapphire Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body. When the season for ice floes arrives, this Pokémon can be seen rolling about on ice and crossing the sea.
Emerald It is completely covered with plushy fur. As a result, it never feels the cold even when it is rolling about on ice floes or diving in the sea.
FireRed Its body is covered in fluffy fur. The fur keeps it from feeling cold while it is rolling on ice.

X They can't swim well yet, and they move much faster by rolling. When they're happy, they clap fins.
Y Its body is covered in fluffy fur. The fur keeps it from feeling cold while it is rolling on ice.
Omega Ruby Spheal is much faster rolling than walking to get around. When groups of this Pokémon eat, they all clap at once to show their pleasure. Because of this, their mealtimes are noisy.
Alpha Sapphire Spheal always travels by rolling around on its ball-like body. When the season for ice floes arrives, this Pokémon can be seen rolling about on ice and crossing the sea.

Sword This Pokémon's body is covered in blubber and impressively round. It's faster for Spheal to roll around than walk.
Shield As it drifts among the waves, Spheal probes the sea. As soon as it spots prey, it informs the Walrein in its herd.
Brilliant Diamond It rolls across ice floes to reach shore because its body is poorly shaped for swimming.
Shining Pearl
Legends: Arceus During the season when drift ice approaches the shore, Spheal prefers living on the ice—where fewer predators lurk—rather than the land. Its fur retains heat superbly and resists harsh cold.
