Soaring can first be accessed after receiving the Eon Flute from Steven Stone. Once the Eon Flute is used, Latias or Latios will come to the the player's side and Mega Evolve. This is regardless to whether or not the Pokémon are present in the player's party, or even holding their respective Mega Stones.

While soaring, several wild Flying-type Pokémon may be encountered, as well as special locations known as Mirage spots. Players may also freely travel to any previously visited location, much in the same way as flying.

Players also maintain full control over the Pokémon, allowing them to perform various aerobatic stunts.

Mirage spots

Artwork of Mirage spots

Hoenn is home to strange phenomena known as Mirage spots, which occur throughout the region. Many are random and spontaneous, while others may only be found when in possession of certain Items or Pokémon. These anomalies can manifest themselves in several ways, including: rifts within the Space-Time Continuum, unusual localized weather phenomena, and the sudden appearance of entire islands and other landmasses.

Mysterious portals lie in the heart of many of these spots. If interacted with, a rare legendary Pokémon may emerge from the portal, inciting battle with the player.

Once every 24 hours, a special Mirage spot such as caves, forests, islands or mountains will spawn into existence. The player can also encounter more through StreetPass; however, once the original 24-hour-cycle has ended, all current Mirage spots will fade away. In Pacifidlog Town lives a old man who will inform the player about Mirage spots.
