[[Category:{{{type1}}}-type Pokémon|{{{ndex}}}]] Skarmory (Japanese: エアームド Airmd) is a dual-type Steel/Flying Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Skarmory are tall birds with long necks and long legs. They have red feathers under sheathes that cover their very sharp wings. Their skin is hard because they live and are raised in very harsh conditions. Their nests are usually found in thorn bushes, where continual scratching of their skin will eventually harden it into an iron-like state. Skarmory, like most Template:Type2 Pokémon, are silver-gray except for their red feathers and their yellow eyes. Their feet both have two toes on them and their tails have hooked ends. Their wings are actually hollow, despite their appearance, allowing them to travel up to 190mph.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Despite being covered in extremely durable armor, they are also surprisingly swift in flight, and it's feathers are sharp enough to be used as swords and knives.

Skarmory is the only Pokémon able to learn Steel Wing by leveling up.

Behavior

Skarmory are highly territorial and will attack anyone who threatens them. They also choose to build their nests out of sharp brambles.

Habitat

Skarmory like to live in tough terrain, often near volcanic areas and large mountains. They always build their nests in thorns and brambles. This ensures their offspring's safety as no other Pokémon can get near and their offspring's skin will be scratched until it is hard like its parents.

Several Skarmory appeared in Steeling Peace of Mind! and Saving the World From Ruins!.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Skarmory.
  • Mantine and Skarmory have the exact same base stats, except that Mantine is Specially oriented, as opposed to Skarmory, who is Physically based.
  • Although Skarmory is part Template:Type2, and has a tail, it can not learn Iron Tail.
  • Skarmory's wings were solid silver in Gold and Silver. This was fixed in Crystal.
  • Skarmory has kidnapped more Pokémon and people in the anime than any other Pokémon, with the possible exception of Meowth. It has kidnapped Jessie's Wobbuffet, May, an Azumarill, Meowth, and in the Mystery Dungeon special it also kidnapped Diglett, Pichu and Pikachu.
  • Skarmory is the only Pokémon to learn Steel Wing via level-up, and is one of only three Pokémon that get STAB from it. The other two are Scizor and Empoleon.

Origin

Skarmory has much in common with the Andean Condor. It also shares characteristics of cranes, birds which are held in high esteem in Japan; such characteristics include a long neck and long legs, and a daggerlike beak. It is also similar to the Stymphalian Birds in the Greek story The Twelve Labors of Hercules. Skarmory is also believed to be based off of an armored knight.

Name origin

Skarmory is a combination of sky and armory. Its Japanese name is likely based on air or a pun on armored. It could also come from scar, which refers to the scars it receives from its thorny nest, armor and cassowary a bird it resembles. It could also be from the slang word "skarper", which could be due to Skarmory's surprising speed, and "armory".

In other languages

  • German: Panzaeron - From panzer (tank) and the prefix aero- (referring to air).
  • French: Airmure - From air and armure (armor).
  • Korean: 무장조 Mujangjo
