Locations and uses of the Silph Scope

Generation I/Generation III

The Silph Scope was initially stolen by Team Rocket, and is obtained from the Rocket Hideout after the player defeats Giovanni. It enables the player to identify the formally unidentifiable Ghosts appearing within Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town, and is required to pass the stairway that is guarded by a ghost of a Marowak.

In Generation I, the Silph Scope can be stored via the PC. If it is done so, the Pokémon within Pokémon Tower will appear as ghosts once again. The player must have the Silph Scope in their items list in order to identify the ghosts.

Trivia

  • As the name suggests, this Silph Scope was apparently made by Silph Co., which Team Rocket later invades.
  • A sign next to the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town advertises the Silph Scope, proclaiming "Make the invisible plain to see!".
