Serperior (Japanese: ジャローダ Jalorda) is a Grass-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Servine starting at level 36. It is the final form of Snivy.

Biology

Physiology

Serperior is a primarily pale-green, snake-like Pokémon. Serperior has curled pale-green patterns on the sides of its face and snout, and small, pointed yellow extensions on the back of their heads. Its face and upper neck are white-colored, and curled, tendril-like darker green extensions spread out from the sides of its lower neck, forming a curling pattern lower down the body, resembling a fancy collar. It has narrow red eyes, and small, pointed teeth on its lower jaw. The upper section of its body is dark green, and the lower pale green. Curled yellow patterns adorn its body, and a sprig-like feature of several leaves tip its tail. It has lost its legs completely, and now only has small, stubby hands.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Serperior is able to amplify sunlight inside its body. Its piercing stare can stop opponents in their tracks.

Behavior

Serperior holds its head high pretentiously while fighting and tends to stay elegant at all times. It doesn't take most opponents seriously, unless said opponent is particularly powerful.

Habitat

Like its pre-evolutions, Serperior like to live in grasslands and forests.

Trivia

  • Serperior is the tallest Pokémon introduced in Generation V, Grass-type Pokémon, and fully evolved starter Pokémon.
  • Serperior is the only Pokémon without legs in the same evolutionary line as a starter Pokémon.
  • Serperior is the first fully evolved Grass-type starter Pokémon whose English name is not eight letters long.
  • Serperior, Samurott and Emboar all share the same base stat total of 528.
  • Serperior's evolutionary line is the only starter Pokémon evolutionary line to not learn any Ground-type moves, discounting Hidden Power.
  • Serperior and Samurott are the only two fully evolved starter Pokémon that cannot learn Earthquake.
  • Serperior is the only starter Pokémon as well as the only Pokémon introduced in Generation V with a serpentine body.
  • Serperior has the lowest Attack of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.

Origin

Serperior is based on multiple species of non-venomous snakes and limbless lizards, such as the Green Vine Snake, the Emerald Tree Boa, the Royal Python or the snake-like Lialis burtonis. Its design was based on Strelitzias, most likely either the strelitzia juncea and/or the strelitzia reginae. Its appearance may have also been inspired by the Quetzalcoatl; a green, feathered serpent deity. Serperior's appearance may have been based on the acanthus leaf motifs used specially during the 18th century. It and its pre-evolutions were confirmed to have been inspired from European, specifically French, royalty. The fact that Serperior amplifies sunlight in its body, as stated in its Pokédex entry, may be an allusion to King Louis XIV, a famous French king who referred to himself as the "Sun King". Serperior's white face also alludes to the skin whitening fashion, mostly used by the European aristocracy in the 17th century. Serperior's dark green design on its chest seems to form a Fleur-de-lis a french insignia that is used on many European noble families' and nations' coat of arms. The fact that Serperior can seize opponents with its piercing stare makes a reference to the Basilisk, king of serpents in European legends. The plant-like appendages may bear a small resemblance to the cobra.

Name origin

Serperior is a combination of serpent and superior. It may also be a combination of serpent and warrior or emperor.

Jalorda is derived from 蛇 ja (snake) and lord.
