Sentret (Japanese: オタチ Otachi) is a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Furret starting at level 15.

Biology

Physiology

Sentret is a small furry mammal with a big round body with stubby arms and two small feet. Its fur is light brown, and it has a tail with dark brown stripes that it uses to stand on to see if there is danger nearby. It has long dark brown ears, a white ring on its belly, and white paw pads. While it is capable of standing on its hind legs, it usually moves on all four.

Special abilities

Sentret are able to stand on their tails. They do this to find out whether there is any danger nearby and also to warn others of possible danger. Their shrieks warn all Pokémon in the neighborhood of any possible danger.

Behavior

Sentret has a very nervous and cautious behavior, apparently fearing for its life. It will not sleep alone, and usually sleeps while another of its kind watches for danger. When one sees a predator, it warns the rest in its pack, and they all flee.

Habitat

Grassland Pokémon

Sentret appear frequently in the grasslands of the Johto and Sevii Islands regions, with some appearances in Kanto's Route 1. They will also occasionally appear in Sinnoh and Unova.

Sentret first appeared in Tanks a Lot!. A young Sentret and Misty's Togepi hi-jacked Team Rocket's Arbo-Tank. Later, the two were rescued by Ash and his friends with the help of the young Sentret's family.

Chaz used a Sentret to show a demonstration of Iron Tail to Ash's Pikachu in All Things Bright and Beautifly!.

A Sentret was one of the Pokémon seen at the Pokémon Swap Meet in Tricks of the Trade.

A Sentret was one of the Pokémon stolen by Butch and Cassidy in The Fortune Hunters.

Sentret was first seen as a Pokémon under the ownership of Professor Elm.

Later, it is seen at Earl's Pokémon Academy in Violet City. Crystal uses it to illustrate the concept of held items, such as Berries, to one of the children.

Team Rocket was shown to own many of them in VS Arceus IX.

Trivia

• In each region, there is a two-stage Normal-type Pokémon encountered early in the region. Sentret is the Johto variation on this theme, while Rattata, Zigzagoon, Bidoof, and Patrat are those of Kanto, Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova respectively.
  • Sentret can only be found in one area of Johto (Route 29) while its counterparts may be seen in several parts of their respective regions.
• Sentret shares the same species name with Patrat. They are both known as the Scout Pokémon.
• Sentret is the only Pokémon that has a base stat total of 215.

Origin

Despite its name, Sentret's behavior and markings are more similar to meerkats than ferrets. It also shares traits with flying squirrels (more specifically, the Japanese giant flying squirrels), sugar gliders, and raccoons.

Name origin

Sentret is a combination of sentry and ferret.

Otachi is a combination of 尾 o (tail) and 立ち tatsu (stand) or 鼬 itachi (weasel).
