The English name of this item is a mistranslation. In the original Japanese versions, it is known as ひでんのくすり Secret Medicine. The flaw was finally noticeable in Generation IV due to its in-bag sprite being that of a small bag of pill-like objects, rather than a potion. The name, however, was kept, perhaps as a reference to the original Gold and Silver storyline, or as some would hope, in anticipation of a remake of Gold and Silver much like what happened to the original Red and Green.

The SecretPotion (Japanese: ひでんのくすり Secret Medicine) is a Key Item in the Generation II and Generation IV Pokémon games. It is a special kind of medicine, however, its use is restricted, and cannot be used on the player's Pokémon.

In the games

Gold, Silver, and Crystal

The SecretPotion first appeared in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. It is only obtainable once, from the pharmacy in Cianwood City. Obtaining the SecretPotion is a compulsory part of the games; it is needed to fight the Olivine Gym Leader, Jasmine. The first time she is encountered she will be with a sick Ampharos in the Glitter Lighthouse, and will not return to the Gym until her Pokémon is healed. The SecretPotion is the only cure for Amphy's illness.

The SecretPotion is given to Jasmine, who will heal Amphy on her own. It will not be returned to the player, and cannot be used to heal his or her own Pokémon.

Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum

The SecretPotion made a second appearance in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. Like in Generation II, it is an important part of the games' plot, and will heal a flock of Psyduck who are blocking Route 210 of their headaches. The SecretPotion is received from Cynthia, Sinnoh's League Champion, near the blocked entrance to Lake Valor after the player has earned both the Cobble Badge and the Fen Badge, defeated the Galactic Grunts outside the Galactic Warehouse in Veilstone City, and chased another Grunt from Pastoria City all the way to Valor Lakefront and defeated him.

Unlike in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the player retains the SecretPotion after its use in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. However, there is no use for it and no way to use it after healing the Psyduck.

HeartGold and SoulSilver

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver are the fourth generation remakes of Generation II, and as such the SecretPotion serves the same purpose as in those games. It is obtained in Cianwood City and heals Amphy. Jasmine will take the medicine from the player to do so, and will not return it. Something odd about the picture next to the description is that after use, there will only be two SecretPotions left.

Janina took the medicine back on an Express Ferry, while Ash and friends explored the Whirl Islands before returning to the mainland to challenge Jasmine for the Mineral Badge.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

The SecretPotion appeared in Suffering Psyduck, where Cynthia used it to cure the Psyduck from their headache on Route 210.

In the Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys manga

Gold received the SecretPotion from Chuck in The Secret Of The Fighting Type Pokémon. It was then sent to Olivine City to heal Amphy. According to Chuck, the pharmacy that sold the medicine closed down ages ago, making his sample of it the only remaining one.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga

Red and his Pokémon went to Cianwood City in Light Up the Lighthouse!! in order to get a SecretPotion from a pharmacy. When they went in the pharmacy, the owner gave it to them after telling them a tale. While at sea, Clefairy lost it, but took one of the pills prior to it getting lost. When Clefairy later ate the pill when their ship was approaching the unlighted Olivine Harbor, he started to glow, saving the ship from crashing.

Trivia

 • Other Potion items have a spray bottle as their in-game Bag sprite, but the SecretPotion features a pouch of pills. This is due to the Japanese name, Secret Medicine, not specifying the design of the medicine and not referencing the standard healing item.
