The Secret Medicine (Japanese: ひでんのくすり Secret Medicine), called Secret Potion until Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and formatted as SecretPotion prior to Generation VI, is a Key Item introduced in Generation II.

Terminology
English
In Generation II, the name of this item was rendered in all-caps like other item names: "SECRETPOTION". This fits the 12-character limit for item names in early games. The appearance of this item was unknown at the time due to the lack of item sprites.

In Generation IV, this item name was written as "SecretPotion" due to all-caps being no longer used. The item name still included the word "Potion" even though this generation introduced the sprite for this item, revealing it to be a pouch of pills instead of a liquid substance like the Potion, Super Potion, Hyper Potion, or Max Potion.

From Generation VI until Pokémon Sword and Shield, this item was named "Secret Potion" (with a space). However, this is only found in the game data and not seen in normal gameplay, since this item is not obtainable in those games.

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, this item was renamed to "Secret Medicine".

In the games
Japanese
Gold, Silver, and Crystal
In Japanese, this item has been consistently named 「ひでんのくすり」 (Secret Medicine), despite the name changes in English over the generations.
The SecretPotion first appeared in Gold. It is only obtainable once, from the pharmacy in Cianwood City. Obtaining the SecretPotion is a compulsory part of the games; it is needed to fight the Olivine Gym Leader, Jasmine. The first time she is encountered she will be with a sick Ampharos in the Glitter Lighthouse, and will not return to the Gym until her Pokémon is healed. The SecretPotion is the only cure for Amphy's illness.

The SecretPotion is given to Jasmine, who will heal Amphy on her own. It will not be returned to the player, and cannot be used to heal his or her own Pokémon.
This item name includes the Japanese word 「くすり」 (Medicine), which does not indicate exactly what kind of medicine is it. For comparison, this word is also used in the Japanese names of the Potion, Super Potion, Hyper Potion, Max Potion, and Full Restore, which are usually depicted as substances stored in spray bottles, as opposed to the Secret Medicine which is depicted as a pouch of pills.

Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
In the core series games
The SecretPotion made a second appearance in Diamond. Like in Generation II, it is an important part of the games' plot, and will heal a flock of Psyduck who are blocking 210 of their headaches. The SecretPotion is received from Cynthia, Sinnoh's League Champion, near the blocked entrance to Lake Valor after the player has earned both the Cobble and the Fen, defeated the Galactic Grunts outside the Galactic Warehouse in Veilstone City, and chased another Grunt from Pastoria City all the way to Valor Lakefront and defeated him.

How Cynthia acquired the SecretPotion is unknown, but Jasmine does appear in both Sunyshore City and Hearthome City in Sinnoh.
Effect
========
The Secret Potion is given to Jasmine in the Olivine Lighthouse to cure a sick Ampharos named Amphy. Afterwards, she returns to the Olivine Gym, allowing the player to challenge her.

Unlike in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the player retains the SecretPotion after its use in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. However, there is no use for it and no way to use it after healing the Psyduck.

The Secret Potion/Secret Medicine heals a flock of Psyduck who are blocking the way on 210 of their headaches, allowing the player to continue through the route.

HeartGold and SoulSilver
Legends: Arceus
HeartGold and SoulSilver are the fourth generation remakes of Generation II, and as such the SecretPotion serves the same purpose as in those games. It is obtained in Cianwood City and heals Amphy. Jasmine will take the medicine from the player to do so, and will not return it. Something odd about the picture next to the description is that after use, there will only be two SecretPotions left.
The Secret Medicine is an item that plays a role in Request 32: "The Headache-Stricken Psyduck". Martia of the Diamond Clan asks the player to return with a cure for the headaches ailing a group of Psyduck blocking a house in the Diamond Settlement. Tomma of the Medical Corps gives the player the medicine to complete the request.

Trivia
Trivia
* Other Potion items have a spray bottle as their in-game Bag sprite, but the SecretPotion features a pouch of pills. This is due to the Japanese name, Secret Medicine, not specifying the design of the medicine and not referencing the standard healing item.
* This is the only item from earlier games whose sprite was introduced in Diamond and Pearl.
