If you were looking for the hold-items in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, see Scarves (Mystery Dungeon).

Scarves (Japanese: バンダナ bandanna) are a special class of held items that add to the Contest condition of a Pokémon. They will boost the Pokémon's performance in the preliminary round of both Hoenn's Pokémon Contests and Sinnoh's Super Contests.

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the Pokémon Fan Club President at Slateport City will give away one of these when first shown a Pokémon with a condition high enough in the scarf's respective concentration. In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, they are given away by the Scarf Guy in Pastoria City for the same reason.

Ruby's Pokémon with the scarf that represent their contest category

Before competing in the Master Rank, Ruby was given five scarfs that he used on the contest to enchance Nana's Coolness, Coco's Cuteness, Zuzu's Toughness, Mimi's Beauty and Popo's Smartness leading all of them to win the Contest, fulfilling Ruby's part of the 80-day challenge.

Note that only Coco actually uses it as a scarf, Nana and Popo used theirs as a bandanna, Zuzu used on his arm and Mimi used hers (offscreen) in her horn.

  • While not related to these scarves, the item that enhances the power of Normal-type moves is the Silk Scarf.
  • Another unrelated item that takes effect in battle is known as the Choice Scarf; it enhances the holder's Speed but only allows it to use one move.
