Roserade (Japanese: ロズレイド Roserade) is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon.

It evolves from Roselia via Shiny Stone. It is the final form of Budew.

Biology

Physiology

The three spikes that Roserade had on its head when it was a Roselia have been replaced with "hair" made of white rose petals. Roserade no longer has a leafy skirt, but a leafy, green cape instead. This Pokémon species has red eyes that are similar to the Pokémon of Ralts's evolutionary line, they also have yellow eyelids. The single roses that Roserade had in its hands when it was a Roselia have now become bouquets of roses instead (Red and Blue). Its skin is two shades of green (light and dark).

Gender differences

A female has a longer cape than a male.

Special abilities

Roserade can generally use any attacks that its pre-evolutions can use, but with greater strength. Roserade is able to learn how to perform Weather Ball. As a fully evolved Pokémon, Roserade can use Hyper Beam and Giga Impact. Its hands contain toxins that allow it to use Poison Sting.

Behavior

Roserade tend to have quite a deceptive nature. It lures its prey to it with a pleasant aroma and kills the victim with thorny vines hidden within the bouquets it holds in its arms. This is also how Roserade hunts for food.

Habitat

Roserade lives in fields and woods with temperate climates.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Since Roserade is a plant-based Pokémon, Roserade probably nourishes itself through photosynthesis. Roserade probably eats insects that are attracted to the scent of flowers like the ones Roserade has.

In the anime

Roserade first appeared in Oh Do You Know The Poffin Plan, under the ownership of Forsythia. Forsythia first met her Roserade when it was a Budew. Roserade also protects Forsythia's garden from being ravaged.

Another appearance of Roserade was in The Grass Menagerie! when Ash was battling Gardenia.

Another Roserade appeared in The Rise of Darkrai as one of the Pokémon attacked by Darkrai and being treated by Alicia in Alice's flashback of her grandmother.

Drew is revealed to have evolved his Roselia into a Roserade by May in A Full Course Tag Battle!, and was first seen in "person" watching the Wallace Cup with Drew in Strategy With a Smile!.

Roserade appeared in Barry's Busting Out All Over! under the ownership of Barry. It was used in his battle against Ash. It defeated Chimchar with its Poison Jab while it tied with Gliscor. It appeared again in Steeling Peace of Mind!.

In the manga

Roserade appears in Pokémon Special, in the Diamond & Pearl chapter. Gardenia used a Roserade while battling against Platinum.

Trivia

File:RosieEnglish.png
Rosie's Roserade Costume (English Version)
  • A Roserade costume is available in Pokémon Battle Revolution to the Cool Girl class, and is worn by Rosie.
  • Although Roserade's front sprites show gender differences, its back sprites do not. The same occurs with Mamoswine, and the opposite occurs with Torchic, Buizel and Floatzel.
  • Roserade is the only final form dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon not introduced in the same generation as all other members of its evolutionary line.
  • Roserade is the only final form Pokémon of its type combination whose name does not start with "V".
  • Since no leveling up is required to evolve it from Roselia, and breeding Budew is optional, Roserade is one of the two fully evolved three-stage Pokémon capable of legitimately being level 1 (Porygon-Z is the other).

Origin

Roserade appears to be based on a combination of a bouquet of roses, and a mysterious patron of a masquerade ball, in which masks would be worn to hide the identity of the participants. Its mask, cape and the mention of its 'movements of a dancer' in its Pokédex entry seem to confirm this.

Roserade may also have been based on ganguro, a style in Japan that was popular around the 90s where women would acquire a dark tan, bleach their hair to blonde or some other light color, and wear white or light-colored makeup.

Name origin

Roserade's name is probably a combination of rose and masquerade, due to the appearance of wearing a mask.
