Rhydon (Japanese: サイドン Sidon) is a dual-type Ground/Rock Pokémon.

It evolves from Rhyhorn starting at level 42 and evolves into Rhyperior when traded holding a Protector.

Rhydon holds the distinction of being the first Pokémon ever created.

Biology

Physiology

Rhydon is a large, gray, bipedal Pokémon with an amalgam of features from dinosaurs and rhinoceroses. Rhydon's most famous feature is the cream-colored, drill-like horn on its snout, although there are other protrusions on the head as well. These include the front-pointing crest extending from the middle of its head, two triangular, ear-like features to the sides of the crest, a wavy-shaped, also ear-like extension further down its head, and the spiky ridges on the sides of its mouth. It has a long tail with skinny, black stripes. Rhydon has a cream-colored stomach and a ridged back.

Gender differences

The female's drill-horn is smaller than the male's.

Rhydon surfing

A devastatingly powerfully built powerhouse based on physical strength, Rhydon the Drill Pokémon accordingly centers its fighting style on its wicked, rotatable facial drill horn. This massive Pokémon is over 100 kilograms and is well protected by its near indestructible armor-like hide, capable of passing unscathed through streams of magma, and astonishingly, supposedly even capable of absorbing a direct blow from a cannonball without being harmed. This Pokémon is said to be able to survive in 3,600 degree molten lava because of its rugged and durable hide, but is consequentially extremely insensitive to pain. Though forgetful, Rhydon is somewhat intelligent unlike Rhyhorn, its brain having developed well after it started walking upright on its two back legs. Erecting in stature also freed its forelegs for better utilization in combat. Rhydon is recorded as being able to topple buildings with a sweeping blow of its tail, or more famously by charging with the spinning drill horn on its face. With its daunting drill horn, Rhydon is able to bore holes in solid rock, and even shatter diamonds. Also, due to its typing, Rhydon is immune to any and all Electric-type attacks, its drill horn serving as a lightning rod. Alternately however, as demonstrated in Riddle Me This, if targeted directly, Blaine’s Rhydon’s drill horn was an extremely vulnerable weak spot for electrical attacks. The reasoning for this is unknown. Additionally to all of this, Rhydon is tremendously versatile and can be taught via technical machines Fire, Ice and Electric-type attacks including Incinerate, Blizzard and Thunder. This Pokémon’s range even extends to certain Fighting, Poison, Dragon, Ghost-type and surprisingly Water-type moves, the most surprising of these being Surf because of Rhydon's weakness to water and otherwise seeming lack of buoyancy.

Behavior

Rhydon are apparently much smarter than their pre-evolution, evidenced by their ability to stand on its hind-legs. Despite this, they are still very forgetful.

Habitat

Rhydon are mainly found in cavernous areas, although its rugged hide also enables it to live in lava. One is likely to encounter a wild one in Kanto or Sinnoh.

Major appearances

Rhydon's first major role was in Riddle Me This, being one of Blaine's Pokémon. Blaine used a Rhydon against Ash during the first battle for Ash's Volcano Badge. While normally tough against electric attacks, Rhydon was defeated when Ash's Pikachu struck Rhydon's horn, which acted like a lightning rod. It reappeared in a flashback in Volcanic Panic and Bad to the Bone.

Right on, Rhydon! featured a Rhydon that knew Surf. It was eventually caught by Pietra.

In Bibarel Gnaws Best!, the head engineer owned a Rhydon.

A Rhydon used by a Team Rocket Grunt appeared in Meloetta and the Undersea Temple!.

Minor appearances

A mechanical Rhydon appeared in Island of the Giant Pokémon as a part of Pokémon Land.

Rhydon also appeared in the banned episode EP035 as on of the Pokémon seen in the Safari Zone.

Rhydon's true debut episode was Showdown at Dark City, under the ownership of one of the Trainers at Kas Gym.

Giovanni owns a Rhydon that he loaned to Jessie and James in The Battle of the Badge.

A Rhydon was among the Pokémon seen at Professor Oak's Laboratory in Showdown at the Po-ké Corral.

A Trainer named Assunta used one to battle Ritchie in Friends to the End.

An unkown Trainer's Rhydon was the last Pokémon that Jon Dickson's Rapidash had to beat in order to win the Silver Conference Trophy in Johto Photo Finish.

Brock's dad, Flint, has a Rhydon, but was just mentioned in A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!. Flint mostly used his Rhydon for helping him decorate the Pewter Gym's battlefield with rocks from mountaintops.

A Rhydon was also owned by a demolition crew (which was changed into a construction crew due to Ritchie changing the past) in Celebi and Joy.

Rhydon also made a cameo appearance in Numero Uno Articuno as one of Noland's Pokémon.

Multiple Rhydon appeared in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew as part of the feuding armies.

A Rhydon made a small appearance in The Rise of Darkrai as one of the Pokémon Darkrai hit with a Dark Void.

Rhydon in Pokémon Adventures

Rhydon debuts in the Red, Green & Blue arc in its own round, Raging Rhydon, as Koga's Pokémon that is forced to evolve by its Trainer with a mysterious injection, being the first evolution shown in the manga due to Red's Poliwhirl and Blue's Charmeleon evolving off-screen at the time.

Rhydon is later seen as one of Giovanni's Pokémon, but is not seen battling.

In Volume 9, Blue captures a Rhydon outside the Viridian Gym. He uses it to defeat Chuck in Volume 13, as well as Orm in Volume 23. Near the end of the FireRed and LeafGreen saga, Blue remarks on a footnote Giovanni included in his handbook: Rhydon possibly possessed a stronger form. This is a reference to Rhydon's new evolution, Rhyperior, an evolution that succeeded in occurring thanks to Silver's knowledge of Pokémon trading, resulting in the same Rhydon, as Rhyperior, on hand with him.

Earlier in the same volume, Gold encounters a wild Rhydon during his race with Whitney. The Rhydon in question was hunting down a Sudowoodo hiding from it, and kidnapped Whitney when she interfered with her Miltank, breaking her arm in the process. Gold tells Sudowoodo to stand up for itself and, with assistance from his billiard cue, helps Sudowoodo defeat the Rhydon with a strong punch to the gut. The Sudowoodo happily joined his team afterwards.

In the Pokémon Zensho manga

Giovanni's Rhydon was Satoshi's opponent for his final Gym battle. It went up against his Charizard and was defeated.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga

Giovanni's Rhydon was used in the Gym battle against Red in Get The Last Badge!!.

In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

Gary has a Rhydon which was sent out with his other Pokémon to battle the giant Slowpoke in Ash vs. Gary.

Trivia

Early sketches of Rhydon

• According to interviews with Ken Sugimori (translation), Rhydon holds the distinction of being the first Pokémon ever created. This is further supported as its index number is 001 in Generation I, as well as early sketches from Capsule Monsters featuring Rhydon.
• Ash's Pikachu fought Blaine's Rhydon in the anime and defeated it, despite it being a Ground-type immune to Electric attacks. Rhydon's horn also serves as a lightning rod which negates electric attacks as of the rules for the Pokémon effect. Since then, that battle has been brought up frequently in comparisons between the games and anime and has spawned the popular Pokémon Internet meme, "Pikachu! Aim for the horn!"
• Since Rhydon's index number is 001 in Generation I, a glitch Pokémon with an index number of 000 or that is greater than 152 will revert back to Rhydon when its Pokédex entry is viewed.
• Rhydon and Rhyperior share the same species name with Nidoqueen and Nidoking. They are all known as Drill Pokémon.
• Rhydon's evolution line are the only Pokémon with the Rock/Ground combination to have Ground as its primary type.
• Rhydon and its pre-evolution's Chinese name state it as being "Steel-Covered." However, neither are Steel-type nor learn any Steel-type moves by level up.
• Rhydon has the highest base Attack stat of any Pokémon that is not fully evolved.
  • However, before Generation IV introduced Rhyperior, Rhydon was fully evolved.

Origin

It appears to draw much of its inspiration from a rhinoceros and some aspects of various dinosaurs, such as the triceratops.

Name origin

Rhydon may be a combination of rhinoceros and don. Rhy may also derive from the igneous rock called rhyolite, alluding to its Ground/Rock typing. Don may possible mean lord in Latin—emphasizing it being the finally evolution of its line pre-Generation IV—or tooth in Ancient Greek—as it is a suffix commonly used in dinosaur names, so it could be a reference to those prehistoric creatures as well.

Sidon is a combination of 犀 sai (rhinoceros) and don.
