Rest causes the user to fall {{status|Sleep|asleep}}, restoring its HP to its maximum amount. The user will then be asleep for three turns, and wake up on the third turn (second turn in Generation I). The sleep countdown of Rest is not reset by switching.
===Generation I===
Rest causes the user to fall {{status|Sleep|asleep}}, restoring its HP to its maximum amount. The user will then be asleep for two turns, waking up on the second. Rest will fail if the user has full HP.

Any major status ailments the user is affected by will be cured in all aspects, though a glitch in [[Generation I]] games causes the stat reductions associated with {{status|paralysis}} and {{status|burn}} to remain despite the fact that the Pokémon no longer has that status. The damage done by {{m|Toxic}} is also not reset in Generation I, and will continue from where it left off in amount if it is used again. {{m|Safeguard}} will not prevent usage of Rest, and the user of Safeguard will still sleep the full three turns. If a Pokémon with the {{a|Early Bird}} Ability uses Rest, its Ability still applies and the Pokémon's turns asleep will be rounded down from three to one. Rest will automatically fail if used by a Pokémon with {{a|Insomnia}} or {{a|Vital Spirit}}, as these [[Ability|Abilities]] prevent them from falling asleep. Rest will also fail when used while {{m|Uproar}} or {{m|Electric Terrain}} are in effect (if used by a grounded Pokémon in the latter case).
A glitch causes the stat reductions associated with {{status|paralysis}} and {{status|burn}} to remain despite the fact that the Pokémon no longer has that status. The damage done by {{m|Toxic}} is also not reset and will pick up where it left off if the user becomes badly poisoned again.

Rest will fail if the user has full HP, but will also fail in Generation I if the user's maximum HP is 256 or 511, and their HP is one less than that amount.<!--someone prove this?-->
Rest will also fail if the user's maximum HP is 256 or 511 and its current HP is one less than that amount.<!--someone prove this?-->

===Generation I===
===Generation II===
The user will awaken from Rest two turns after it is used.
The user will now awaken from Rest three turns after it is used and can attack on the third. If Rest is used through {{m|Sleep Talk}}, it will restore the user's HP and reset the amount of turns the user stays asleep.

===Generation II===
Any major status conditions the user is affected by will now be cured. {{m|Safeguard}} will not prevent usage of Rest, and the user of Safeguard will still sleep the full two turns.
The user will awaken from Rest three turns after it is used. If Rest is used through {{m|Sleep Talk}}, it will restore the user's HP and reset the amount of turns the user stays asleep. It will fail if the user's HP is full.

===Generation III and on===
===Generations III to V===
If Rest is used through Sleep Talk, it will fail regardless of the user's HP.
Rest will now fail if it is used through Sleep Talk, regardless of the user's HP. If a Pokémon with the {{a|Early Bird}} [[Ability]] uses Rest, its Ability still applies and the Pokémon's turns asleep will be rounded down from three to one. Rest will automatically fail if used by a Pokémon with {{a|Insomnia}} or {{a|Vital Spirit}}, as these Abilities prevent them from falling asleep. Rest will also fail when used while {{m|Uproar}} is in effect.

===Pokémon Mystery Dungeon===
===Generation VI===
When used, the user regains all HP and becomes [[Status_ailments_in_Mystery_Dungeon#Sleep-related_conditions|napping]]. When it wakes up, all other status ailments are also cured.
Rest will fail if {{m|Electric Terrain}} is in effect and the user is [[grounded]]. Rest will also fail if the user is affected by {{a|Sweet Veil}}.

* Jigglypuff uses Rest as its down B attack in the [[Super Smash Bros.]] series. Its effect is vastly different than its Pokémon game counterpart, as rather than healing the player, it launches the opponent into the air and plants a damage-inflicting flower on their head (in Brawl) or sets them on fire (in Melee and the original SSB). This is a close range attack, using it even right next to the target will fail. Jigglypuff must be extremely close to the opponent for the attack to work; otherwise it will fall asleep doing no damage and leaving itself open to attacks.

Its effect is vastly different than its Pokémon game counterpart, as rather than healing the player, it launches the opponent into the air and plants a damage-inflicting flower on their head (in Brawl and SSB4) or sets them on fire (in Melee and the original SSB). This is a close-range attack with the hitbox placed at the center of Jigglypuff's body; using it even right next to the target will fail. If the attack misses, Jigglypuff will fall asleep doing no damage and leaving itself open to attacks.

When used, the user becomes [[Status ailments in Mystery Dungeon#Sleep-related conditions|napping]]. When it wakes up, its HP is restored and all of its status ailments are cured.

* Although Rest does not deal any damage in the normal games, in the [[Super Smash Bros.]] series, {{p|Jigglypuff}}'s Rest attack unleashes an internal explosion that sends any opponent it touches flying, almost always ending in a KO.

* It is possible to teach Rest to Pokémon with the Abilities {{a|Insomnia}} and {{a|Vital Spirit}}, even though they are immune to the {{status|sleep}} condition. In these cases Rest will fail, provided their Ability has not been {{m|Skill Swap}}ped away or neutralized.

Rest (Japanese: ねむる Sleep) is a non-damaging Psychic-type move introduced in Generation I. It has been TM44 in all generations so far.

Effect

Generation I

Rest causes the user to fall asleep, restoring its HP to its maximum amount. The user will then be asleep for two turns, waking up on the second. Rest will fail if the user has full HP.

A glitch causes the stat reductions associated with paralysis and burn to remain despite the fact that the Pokémon no longer has that status. The damage done by Toxic is also not reset and will pick up where it left off if the user becomes badly poisoned again.

Rest will also fail if the user's maximum HP is 256 or 511 and its current HP is one less than that amount.

Generation II

The user will now awaken from Rest three turns after it is used and can attack on the third. If Rest is used through Sleep Talk, it will restore the user's HP and reset the amount of turns the user stays asleep.

Any major status conditions the user is affected by will now be cured. Safeguard will not prevent usage of Rest, and the user of Safeguard will still sleep the full two turns.

Generations III to V

Rest will now fail if it is used through Sleep Talk, regardless of the user's HP. If a Pokémon with the Early Bird Ability uses Rest, its Ability still applies and the Pokémon's turns asleep will be rounded down from three to one. Rest will automatically fail if used by a Pokémon with Insomnia or Vital Spirit, as these Abilities prevent them from falling asleep. Rest will also fail when used while Uproar is in effect.

Generation VI

Rest will fail if Electric Terrain is in effect and the user is grounded. Rest will also fail if the user is affected by Sweet Veil.

Super Smash Bros. series

Jigglypuff uses Rest as its down B attack in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series

When used, the user becomes napping. When it wakes up, its HP is restored and all of its status ailments are cured.

Trivia

  • Although Rest does not deal any damage in the normal games, in the Super Smash Bros. series, Jigglypuff's Rest attack unleashes an internal explosion that sends any opponent it touches flying, almost always ending in a KO.
  • According to Webster's friend in Johto, Rest is a contraction of Recover fast.
  • This move is often combined with a Chesto Berry or a Lum Berry so that it acts like a Full Restore. The combination is widely featured in the games.
  • The English manual for Pokémon Yellow mentions that "Rest's number of turns is changed to between 1 and 3" when used in Colosseum 2. This is not the case.
