Release information

This card was first released in the EX Sandstorm expansion with artwork by Ryo Ueda. It was reprinted in the EX Emerald expansion with the same art, and in the EX Holon Phantoms and POP Series 5 sets with new artwork by the same artist. Another artwork also by Ryo Ueda was used in Great Encounters expansion, originating from the Moonlit Pursuit and Dawn Dash expansion, and later reprinted in POP Series 8.

Rare Candy was later reclassified in Japan as an Item card during the HeartGold & SoulSilver Series, though the English Trainer cards did not adopt this naming convention until after this card's latest print. Unleashed featured new artwork by Noriko Hotta, and the Japanese Reviving Legends expansion featured yet another new illustration by Shizurow.

According to an errata issued alongside Black and White, the card now reads "Choose 1 of your Basic Pokémon in play. If you have a Stage 2 card in your hand that evolves from that Pokémon, put that card on the Basic Pokémon. (This counts as evolving that Pokémon.) You can't use this card during your first turn or on a Basic Pokémon that was put into play this turn."

Trivia

This card's effect is similar to Pokémon Breeder of the Base Set. This card is one of the first to require common knowledge of Pokémon in general, as opposed to observable knowledge on the cards themselves (in this case, of the evolution families of Pokémon).
