The RageCandyBar (Japanese: いかりまんじゅう Rage Manjū) is an item available in , Black, White, Black 2 and White 2. Despite this, it has been mentioned and has been referenced in other games.

Generation II
The RageCandyBar (spelled without spaces due to character limitations) first appeared in Generation II. It is a local specialty of Mahogany Town, in the same vein as the Lavaridge Town's Lava Cookie is in later generations. The first place that the item can be bought is from a salesman blocking the way out of Mahogany (who is there to prevent the player from skipping the Lake of Rage/Team Rocket HQ event); he sells these for pdollar300. Once the Red Gyarados has been captured or defeated, however, he will sell no more. The RageCandyBar remains unavailable until the Team Rocket Executives have been defeated at the Radio Tower. After this, it can be purchased from the Mahogany Town Mahogany Town for, again, pdollar300.

Though the item does not exist in the internal data of the Generation III and Sinnoh-based Generation IV games, it is mentioned repeatedly. In FireRed and LeafGreen, it is mentioned by a NPC in Two Island on Two Island, who claims that is the favorite delicacy of Bruno of the Elite Four, who left the island disappointed when he discovered that the shop was sold out of them. No mention is made in Diamond and Pearl but in Platinum it is claimed to be sold out in the Veilstone Department Store's basement. It is also said to be favored by Professor Rowan, who can be found occasionally in the basement of the Veilstone Department Store sulking about the fact that the mall has run out of them.

HeartGold and SoulSilver
The Rage Candy Bar reappears as an item in HeartGold and SoulSilver. It is available in Mahogany Town only, like in Generation II, but this time around it is a Key Item. This prevents the player from trading it to Diamond, where data for the item does not exist. Despite this, he will refuse to sell more than one.

Generation V
The Rage Candy Bar makes its return as a regular item in Generation V and works in the same way as in Generation II, healing a Pokémon's HP by 20.

In these games, the RageCandyBar acts like a Potion: healing 20 HP. Unlike future games, excluding Pokémon Black, White, Black 2 and White 2, it is a regular item, and can be held by Pokémon and traded between games.
In Black and White, it is first obtainable in the house in the southeast corner of Icirrus City during the Seasons, where the wife of the former Team Rocket Grunt that stole the IV from the Kanto Power Plant gives it as a gift saying that Rage Candy Bars hold the family together. Another one can be obtained from Juniper in Desert Resort after defeating Team Plasma and Ghetsis at N's Castle.
The Rage Candy Bar can be used on one of the five Darmanitan "statues" outside the Relic Castle. Consumed on use, each Darmanitan will be at level 35 with the Ability Zen Mode.

In FireRed, LeafGreen, and Platinum
In Black and White, the player can get four Rage Candy Bars at Pokéstar Studios after recording a movie with a good ending, each from a Smasher, Ace Trainer, Madame, and a young boy in red. Others can be purchased at Join Avenue Join Avenues.
Though the item does not exist in the coding of the Generation III and Sinnoh-based Generation IV games, it is mentioned repeatedly. In Two Island in FireRed and LeafGreen, it is said to be a favorite of Bruno of the Kanto Elite Four, who left the island disappointed when he found that the shop was sold out of them. No mention is made in Diamond and Pearl, however, this is changed in Platinum, where it is claimed to be sold out in the Veilstone Department Store basement. It is also said to be favored by Professor Rowan, who can be found occasionally in the basement of the Veilstone Department Store sulking about the fact they've run out of them.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver
In all Generation V games, Rage Candy Bars are also obtained by defeating all the Trainers in the Royal Unova on Days of the weeks and a Maid on 5 will pay PDollar6000 for a Rage Candy Bar.
The RageCandyBar appears in a similar capacity in HeartGold and SoulSilver as it did in Generation II. It is available in Mahogany Town only, but this time is a key item. This prevents the player from trading it to Diamond, where data for the item does not exist. The RageCandyBar is not a healing item in these games; instead, it is a key item that may be exchanged with a non-player character in the Underground Path (Routes 5-6) for 64.

In this version of the game, the man blocking the way east will still sell the RageCandyBar after the Team Rocket invasion is foiled (instead of the lady in the shop, as in Gold and Silver). However, he will refuse to sell more than one.
Generation VI
In X and Y, the Rage Candy Bar reappears in the same vein as in Generation V and can be found in random hotels.

In Black, White, Black 2 and White 2
In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Rage Candy Bar can sometimes be given by a fan after winning a Contest. Two Rage Candy Bars can also be found at the Trick House during Puzzle 2.
The RageCandyBar makes its return as a regular usable item, first obtainable in the house in the southeast corner of Icirrus City during the winter, where the former Team Rocket Grunt's wife gives it as a gift saying that RageCandyBars hold the family together. Another can be obtained after defeating the Ghetsis and Team Plasma at N's Castle. It is given by Professor Juniper when the player returns to the Relic Castle. Others can be purchased at Join Avenue Join Avenues or obtained by defeating all the Trainers on the Royal Unova on a Days of the week. With its item status returned, the RageCandyBar is used on one of the five Pokémon Darmanitan "statues" outside the Relic Castle. Consumed on use, each Darmanitan will be at level 35 with the Ability Zen Mode. If used as a regular item, the RageCandyBar acts like a Potion: healing 20 HP.

Generation VII
In Sun and Moon, Rage Candy Bars can be obtained randomly by talking to vendors in the Pokémon Center Café, where one can also obtain other "local specialties" from other regions. The Rage Candy Bar has been re-purposed to heal status conditions instead of restoring HP.

Spelling differences between generations
In the manga
Each time it is mentioned, the spelling of the item's name is slightly different. In Generation II, it is spelled in all-caps with no spaces in the item list, as "RAGECANDYBAR". FireRed and LeafGreen add a space and capitalize normally, noting it as "Rage Candybar" (strangely not in all-caps, unlike other items). Platinum, finally, puts spaces between all words as "Rage Candy Bar". In its return in HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is spelled as RageCandyBar, due to the twelve-character limit and capitalization change, as its appearance in Platinum was not as an obtainable item.

The RageCandyBar is based on the Japanese manjū, a type of pounded rice cake. Manjū are sold in Japan as confectionery, and are often unique to certain locales (much as the RageCandyBar is to Mahogany Town). A direct translation would thus prove confusing for English-speaking players, providing reasoning behind naming it as a candy bar. Its in-Bag sprite depicts it in a small box, which could pass for a candy bar wrapper, preventing revelation of the translation issue.

Revision as of 02:51, 4 December 2016

The Rage Candy Bar (Japanese: いかりまんじゅう Rage Manjū) is an item originally exclusive to the Generation II games and reimplemented in every game since Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. It has also been mentioned in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen as well as in Pokémon Platinum.

While it is obtained as a Key Item in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Rage Candy Bar is still required to be bought for $300. Due to this, it is thus far the only Key Item available for purchase.

In the games

Generation II

The Rage Candy Bar first appeared in Generation II. It is a local specialty of Mahogany Town, in the same vein as the Lavaridge Town's Lava Cookie is in later generations. The first place in which the item can be bought is from a salesman blocking the way out of Mahogany Town (who is there to prevent the player from skipping the Lake of Rage and Rocket Hideout events of the plot); he sells these for $300. Once the Red Gyarados has been captured or defeated, he stops selling the item. The Rage Candy Bar remains unavailable until the Rocket Executives have been defeated at the Goldenrod Radio Tower. After this, it can be purchased from the Mahogany Town Souvenir Shop for the same price.

In these games, the Rage Candy Bar acts like a Potion by healing 20 HP.

Generations III and IV

FireRed, LeafGreen, and Platinum

Though the item does not exist in the internal data of the Generation III and Sinnoh-based Generation IV games, it is mentioned repeatedly. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, it is mentioned by a NPC in Two Island on Two Island, who claims that is the favorite delicacy of Bruno of the Kanto Elite Four, who left the island disappointed when he discovered that the shop was sold out of them. No mention is made in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl but in Pokémon Platinum it is claimed to be sold out in the Veilstone Department Store's basement. It is also said to be favored by Professor Rowan, who can be found occasionally in the basement of the Veilstone Department Store sulking about the fact that the mall has run out of them.

HeartGold and SoulSilver

The Rage Candy Bar reappears as an item in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. It is available in Mahogany Town only, like in Generation II, but this time around it is a Key Item. This prevents the player from trading it to Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, where data for the item does not exist. The Rage Candy Bar is not a healing item in these games; instead, it is a Key Item that may be exchanged with a NPC in the Underground Path on Routes 5 and 6 for TM64 (Explosion).

Unlike in the original Pokémon Gold and Silver (and Pokémon Crystal), the man blocking the way east of Mahogany Town will still sell the Rage Candy Bar for $300 after the Team Rocket invasion is foiled instead of the Souvenir Shop lady. Despite this, he will refuse to sell more than one.

Generation V

The Rage Candy Bar makes its return as a regular item in Generation V and works in the same way as in Generation II, healing a Pokémon's HP by 20.

In Pokémon Black and White, it is first obtainable in the house in the southeast corner of Icirrus City during the winter, where the wife of the former Team Rocket Grunt that stole the Machine Part from the Kanto Power Plant gives it as a gift saying that Rage Candy Bars hold the family together.

In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, the player can get four Rage Candy Bars at Pokéstar Studios after recording a movie with a good ending, each from a Smasher, Ace Trainer, Socialite, and a young boy in red. Others can be purchased at Join Avenue Markets.

In all Generation V games, Rage Candy Bars are also obtained by defeating all the Trainers in the Royal Unova on Saturdays and a Maid on Route 5 will pay $6000 for a Rage Candy Bar.

Generation VI

In Pokémon X and Y, the Rage Candy Bar reappears in the same vein as in Generation V and can be found in random hotels.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Rage Candy Bar can sometimes be given by a fan after winning a Pokémon Contest. Two Rage Candy Bars can also be found at the Trick House during Puzzle 2.

Generation VII

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Rage Candy Bars can be obtained randomly by talking to vendors in the Pokémon Center Café, where one can also obtain other "local specialties" from other regions. The Rage Candy Bar has been re-purposed to heal status conditions instead of restoring HP.

Spelling differences between generations

In Generation II, the item's name is spelled in all caps and with no spaces, thus rendering it as "Ragecandybar".

When referred to in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, it is instead rendered as "Rage Candybar" as it is mentioned exclusively in dialogue due to it not being an item in these games. Likewise in Pokémon Platinum, the item is only specified in dialogue but its name is rendered normally as "Rage Candy Bar".

After returning to its status as an item in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver and in all Generation V games, it is spelled in CamelCase (as "RageCandyBar"), due to the twelve-character limit and capitalization change for item names.

Since the character limit was bumped in Generation VI, the item's name is now rendered correctly as "Rage Candy Bar".

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

In Out-Odding Oddish, while on his way to the Pokéathlon Dome, Gold was seen eating some Rage Candy Bars that he had recently purchased. He also threw one into Whitney's mouth, almost causing her to choke. Gold later gave a Rage Candy Bar to Bruno, who immediately fell in love with its delicious taste. In All About Arceus IX, Whitney, who was shown to have a crush on Bruno, was seen sending the Elite Four member a boxful of Rage Candy Bars, much to his pleasure.

In To Make a Musical, Ryoku of the Seven Sages was seen holding a box of Rage Candy Bars in his hand before entering the Relic Castle to catch Volcarona for Ghetsis.

Design basis

The Rage Candy Bar is based on the Japanese manjū, a type of pounded rice cake. Manjū are sold in Japan as confectionery, and are often unique to certain places (much as the Rage Candy Bar is to Mahogany Town). A direct translation would thus prove confusing for English-speaking players, providing reasoning behind naming it as a candy bar. Its in-Bag sprite depicts it in a small box, which could pass for a candy bar wrapper, preventing revelation of the translation issue.

According to Nob Ogasawara, under his alias of Douglas Dinsdale (also Doug Dinsdale), in a thread[1] apparently archived from the Something Awful forums and available at the Let's Play Archive, the name Rage Candy Bar is a mistranslation that was decided by his handlers at Nintendo of America. He claims that the correct translation of いかりまんじゅう is "Rage Dumpling" or, given the twelve-character limit at the time, "Rage Bun". The name Cake of Rage was also suggested by him for the English localization[2], which would match the Lake of Rage.
