Qwilfish (Japanese: ハリーセン Harysen) is a dual-type Water/Poison Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Qwilfish is a small, round fish Pokémon covered in many sharp spikes. These spikes are derived from its scales. It has a paddle-shaped tail which is about half of its body length, colored with a bluish line around the perimeter and two markings in the center of the pattern. The top of its body is a bluish color, while its underbelly is a pale cream color. Qwilfish has large pink lips.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

The spines that cover its body are filled with a toxin which is known to cause fainting. It is able to fire these spines from its body by swallowing large amounts of water. This ability also makes this Pokémon appear bigger than it actually is, making it less vulnerable to predator attacks.

Behavior

When faced with a larger opponent, Qwilfish swallows as much water as it can to match the opponent's size. Qwilfish also finds swimming somewhat challenging, due to its round form.

Habitat

Qwilfish lives in a marine environment.

Dorian, the leader of the unofficial Coastline Gym featured in Just Add Water, owns a Qwilfish.

Minor appearances

There was also a balloon made to look like a Qwilfish in Jirachi: Wish Maker.

Qwilfish made a cameo in Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea.

Several Qwilfish appeared in Hold the Phione!.

Trivia

File:Alpha bukuu.png
Qwilfish's early design
  • An early design for Qwilfish depicts it with a more fish-like tail and fins.
  • Qwilfish is compatible with the Generation III move tutor for Swords Dance, but is incompatible with the TM in Generation IV that teaches the same move.
    • Conversely, it is compatible with the Generation IV TM that teaches Explosion, but incompatible with the Generation III move tutor for the same move. However, it is compatible with the Generation III move tutor for Selfdestruct, a weaker version of Explosion.
  • Qwilfish shares the same species name with Jigglypuff's evolutionary family and Drifloon. They are all known as the Balloon Pokémon.
    • It is the only Balloon Pokémon that neither evolves into or from another Pokémon.
  • Qwilfish's Japanese name (Harysen) is similar to the name of the Trainer Harrison, who, coincidentally, owns a Qwilfish.
  • Qwilfish and Munchlax are the only Pokémon who learn Stockpile by leveling up, but do not learn both Swallow and Spit Up.
    • Coincidentally, they learn Stockpile at the same level: 25.
  • Despite being constantly referred to as a bad swimmer in the Pokédex, Qwilfish is able to learn the move Surf and one of its abilities is Swift Swim.
  • Qwilfish has its backsprite showing its full body in four generations.
  • Qwilfish can be seen as a parallel to Remoraid. Both of them are Water-type Generation II Pokémon. Qwilfish is exclusive to FireRed, while Remoraid is exclusive to LeafGreen, with both Pokémon found in the same locations in their respective versions.

Origin

Qwilfish is based on both pufferfish and porcupinefish. Its ability to shoot its toxic quills somewhat resembles explosions, and may mean it may have been based on a naval mine.

Name origin

Qwilfish's name is a combination of a misspelled quill and fish. Its Japanese name could be a contraction of 針千本 harisenbon, porcupinefish, or the "sen" could come from senbon, or needle. An early version of Qwilfish was called Bukū, which is probably a corruption of 河豚 fugu, pufferfish.

In other languages

  • German: Baldorfish - Possible portmanteau of Ball and Fisch (fish).
  • French: Qwilfish
  • Korean: 침바루 Chimbaru
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 千針魚 Qiān Zhēn Yú - Literally "Thousand-needle fish".
