Professor Oak in the baseball match

Professor Oak first appears in Introducing The Pokémon Clefairy!! where he calls in Green and Red to his lab to get their first Pokémon. Green beats Red to the lab when they were racing. When both trainers were in the lab, Oak gives them each a Pokédex and gives Green his starter Pokémon, a Charmander. Before he left, a Clefairy comes in. Oak did not allow that Clefairy in the lab as he was known for causing mischief. Clefairy calms him down, making him forget what happened. This made Red choose Clefairy as his starter. During the course of Red's and Green's travels, he would usually have contact with them on a regular basis.

In The Life-or-Death Magic Duel!!, Professor Oak tells the two trainers about a legendary Pokémon, Articuno in the Seafoam Islands, where it made its major appearance in the next chapter. He becomes the announcer and judge in Aim to be the No. 1 Pokémon!! of the No. 1 Pokémon contest where he rates the performances of the Pokémon that went on stage, much to Clefairy's annoyance. Professor Oak reappears in Pokémon Baseball Tournament!! as the umpire of a baseball match that Red and Green participate. He tells both trainers that he'll give a prize to the winner of the baseball match. After a long hard fought match, he gives the prize to Red who ended up winning the event. The prize turned out to be Exeggcute which chase Red and his pals away.

Professor Oak makes an appearance in Clefairy Finally Evolves?! where he demonstrates the use of Evolutionary stones since both Clefairy and Red's Pikachu can use them to evolve. He tries them out on Eevee but is stopped for unknown reasons. The Eevee is then released as it was temporary. Professor Oak is revealed to have his own Pokémon during the time Red was in the Pokémon League, as seen when they were used to train Red's before his challenge against the Champion which turned out to be Green.

After Red's finishes in travels in Kanto, he reappears in PM062 where it was revealed that he took the job of having new Trainers choose one of the Starter Pokémon of Johto instead of Professor Elm. He gives Gold a Cyndaquil and Silver a Totodile as their choice of their first Pokémon. Professor Oak also meets a Marill in the same chapter and catches it in the next. In PM064, it is revealed that Green took the only Pokémon that Professor Oak did not give away, Chikorita. However, Chikorita was given back to him in the end of the chapter. In PM068, Professor Oak takes on Giovanni and his twin brother as they stole five Miltank. After defeating those two, he ends up taking the Miltank under his ownership.

Professor Oak did not appear until mid-way in the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga where he only made a few appearances. In We're a Family!!, he gives Blue a Charmander as her starter Pokémon. Later, in Annual Big Cleaning Operation!!, he cleans up the messes scattered in Hoenn with the help of his Pokémon and has Red participate in the clean up as well.

Personality and characteristics

As the job of a Pokémon professor, Professor Oak is a helpful person towards most Trainers, including Red despite the fact that he doesn't get along too well with Clefairy. He also cares about certain Pokémon as seen in PM068 where he rescues five Miltank from Giovanni and his twin brother.
