Poliwrath (Japanese: ニョロボン Nyorobon) is a dual-type Water/Fighting Pokémon.

It evolves from Poliwhirl by Water Stone. It is one of the final forms of Poliwag.

Biology

Physiology

Poliwrath looks superficially similar to Poliwhirl. However, it has gained more muscle, especially around its arms, which are now quite thick. Its eyes have changed from having wide pupils to small ones. It also appears to have a scowl.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

In addition to the Template:Type2 abilities it had as Poliwag and Poliwhirl, Poliwrath has now gained the powers of a Template:Type2. It can also swim for vast distances without tiring and with its increased arm and leg strength it also gains the ability to run on the surface of water for a short amount of time.

Behavior

With its newly gained fighting abilities, Poliwrath is more aggresive then its pre-evolutions, and is more willing to pick fights with others.

Habitat

Poliwrath, despite being excellently skilled swimmers, usually live on dry land.

In Hook, Line and Stinker, Andreas in a Seaking Catching contest owned a Poliwrath.

Chuck used a Poliwrath against Ash in his Gym Battle in Machoke, Machoke Man.

In Outrageous Fortunes, Misty challenged another trainer named Delaney whose main Pokémon was Poliwrath. After seeing it in action, Team Rocket tricked Delaney into giving his Poliwrath to them.

Trivia

  • Despite being classified as a tadpole Pokémon, its form resembles a froglet's and is presumably full grown.
  • In Pokémon Yellow sprites, the swirl on Poliwrath's stomach goes in a clockwise direction, starting from the outside. But in other sprites, it is in the anti-clockwise direction. The same goes for Poliwhirl.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Poliwrath.
  • Poliwrath has a lower Speed stat than Template:P2.

Origin

Poliwrath seems to be based on some amphibians that can stay as a tadpole their whole life. The spiral pattern on its belly is supposed to represent how the intestines of tadpoles can sometimes be seen through their transparent skin.

Name origin

Poliwrath's name appears to be a combination of polliwog and wrath, meaning anger. Its Japanese name may come in part from ニョロニョロ nyoronyoro, the sound of slithering, and an alternate reading of the Japanese word for deluge or flood, 洪 , is hon (in this case, bon).

In other languages

  • German: Quappo - From Kaulquappe (tadpole).
  • French: Tartard - This name could come from tartarin (braggart), as well as têtard (tadpole).
  • Korean: 강챙이 Gangchaengi
  • Chinese (Taiwan and Hong Kong): 蚊香蛙 - 蚊香 is a kind of mosquito repellent used in China that is shaped in a spiral (like Poliwrath's belly). Literally "mosquito repellent frog".
