Red, Green & Blue
Poli was Red's first Pokémon. It is unknown when Red received Poli or if he caught Poli. Flashbacks show Red as a young child with the Pokémon, before the first chapter of Pokémon Adventures. As a child, Red would have drowned, if it wasn't for Poli evolving from a Poliwag to a Poliwhirl, who brought him up to the surface. As a Poliwhirl, he was Red's main battling Pokémon despite him making other catches such as a Nidorino with it, though his defeat against a wild Mew is what causes Red to rethink his hubris in thinking there was no one in the world who could best him, and Blue's Charmander later injured it badly.

Prior to the start of the series, Red owned Poli as a Poliwag. While swimming one day Red began to drown and Poli was unable to do anything but watch. Due to being unable to save Red in his current state he evolved into Poliwhirl and saved him. Poli first appeared in A Glimpse of the Glow, being used by Red to help capture a Nidorino. Poli was later used to battle against a wild Mew, but was knocked out in a hit.

Along with Pika and Saur, he is one of Red's most frequently used Pokémon. He was also principal in Red's battle for the Boulder, though his ample amount of uncured damage from past battles prevented him and Saur from competing in the final match against Brock. He is not seen battling much afterward, only for carrying Misty's Staryu out of Mt. Moon, and in an attempt to demobilize a wild Fearow which survived Pika's Thunder, forcing Poli to freeze it to incapacitate it.
In Onix is On!, Poli was used alongside Saur and Pika to help Red in his Gym battle to win the Boulder Badge. Poli was used in Red's first battle against a Trainer's Graveler and was able to win by using one-hit knockouts and complimentary moves, despite starting off with low health.

In Danger: High Voltorb, Poli was the only member of Red's team to infiltrate the S.S. Anne. Immediately upon entering the two of them end up battling a Voltorb, but ends up paralyzed. Due to Poli being paralyzed and unable to help out, Red is forced to dodge the powerful Thunder Punch attacks from Lt. Surge's Electabuzz. Right when it seems the two of them are trapped, Red reveals their plan, which had Poli secretly drip a trail of water on the floor leading to Lt. Surge and Electabuzz. At Red's command Poliwhirl uses Ice Beam to freeze the legs of Lt. Surge and Electabuzz, and with the smoke of a launched Poké Ball, the two escapes safely. While trying to find the exit Poli is attacked by a Magneton and captured by Lt. Surge, who throws him off the ship. Red attempts to rescue him, but is electrocuted and throw into the ocean as well. As Red begins to recall a similar situation he is saved by Poli, who has evolved into a Poliwrath. With his new found strength Poli easily out powers Electabuzz with its new Seismic Toss. In the Yellow, it is revealed that Poli was able to evolve without a Water Stone due to the Vermilion Harbor having traces of the four evolutionary stones speculated to be at the bottom of Vermilion City.

In Buzz Off, Electabuzz!, Poli evolves into Poliwrath to save Red from drowning again after he falls off the S.S. Anne, having been thrown off deck by Lt. Surge before. At first, it was believed that Poli somehow evolved without a Water Stone. However, in the Yellow, it is explained that he touched one of the four evolutionary stones speculated to be at the bottom of Vermilion Harbor.
In A Tale of Ninetales, Poli is accidentally traded to Blue alongside Saur and Pika. During the three days that Blue has them he trains them vigorously. They later traded back, while keeping the serious attitude that Blue installed in them.

In Meanwhile…Vileplume!, Poli is used in Red's Gym battle against Erika in his fight to save Eevee. Poli goes up against her Bellsprout, with Red being confident that it will be an easy victory. Poli attacks with Double Slap but is stopped on the last hit and counter attacked with Bellsprout's Mimic, knocking Poli out.
At the Pokémon League, Poli and Pika helped Saur defeat Blue's Charizard in a brilliant strategy to have Poli's water vapor and Pika's electric energy create a thundercloud that struck a vine shot and wrapped around it by the Venusaur.

With Red missing for most of the Yellow chapter, Poli was not seen in battle except in a match against Bruno's Hitmonchan in which it seemed to hold the upper hand until its ThunderPunch attacks eventually deplete Poli's health, finishing it. He also participates in Red's rematch against the Elite Four, where he is again beaten by a powerful Machamp in yet another ruse: the water that leaked from it when being stopped allowed Vee to maneuver behind his Pokémon by surprise, allowing it to evolve into a Jolteon and defeat them with a massive Pin Missile.
In Golly, Golem!, Poli is used as Red's first Pokémon in his battle against Giovanni. Red sends out Poli to attack, but in the short amount of time that he does so, Giovanni successfully releases his Cloyster and freezes Poli.

During the Gold, Silver & Crystal, Red does not carry Poli on his team with him, enabling him to use both Green's Blastoise and Blue's Charizard. This is a reference to Red's team in Gold and Silver.
During the Pokémon League, Poli is used in a battle against a Trainer's Kabutops, advancing Red to the semi-finals. In A Charizard…and a Champion, Poli and Pika helped Saur defeat Blue's Charizard in a brilliant strategy by having Poli's water vapor and Pika's electric energy create a thundercloud that struck a vine shot and wrapped around it by Saur.

Poli's Damp ability combined with Deoxys's use of Skill Swap enabled Red to counter Carr's exploding Forretress in the FireRed & LeafGreen. He also defeated Carr's Steelix, showing an impressive feat of hurling the megaton monster away. However, once Deoxys arrived and launched its Psycho Boost attack, Poli and the rest of its teammates are nearly killed after shielding Red from the blast, which shatters Red's confidence.
Yellow
In Punching Poliwrath, Poli is shown in a flashback fighting against Bruno's Hitmonchan. Poli was easily able to block all of Hitmonchan's attacks and strike back with Double Slap, but was taken out when Hitmonchan attacked with Thunder Punch and Fire Punch. Poli was used in Red's rematch against Bruno in Clefabulous Clefable, where he is used to battle against Machamp. Machamp quickly overpowers him after his belt is removed and holds Poli down. Vee manages to use the water Poli left to use Acid Armor to surprise attack Machamp, allowing him to defeat it.

Poli (Japanese: ニョロ Nyoro) was Red's first Pokémon in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

History

Red, Green & Blue arc

As a Poliwag

Prior to the start of the series, Red owned Poli as a Poliwag. While swimming one day Red began to drown and Poli was unable to do anything but watch. Due to being unable to save Red in his current state he evolved into Poliwhirl and saved him. Poli first appeared in A Glimpse of the Glow, being used by Red to help capture a Nidorino. Poli was later used to battle against a wild Mew, but was knocked out in a hit.

As a Poliwhirl

In the Yellow arc, it is revealed that Poli was able to evolve without a Water Stone due to the Vermilion Harbor having traces of the four evolutionary stones speculated to be at the bottom of Vermilion Harbor.

In Golly, Golem!, Poli is used as Red's first Pokémon in his battle against Giovanni. Red sends out Poli to attack, but in the short amount of time that he does so, Giovanni successfully releases his Cloyster and freezes Poli.

Yellow arc

Damp activated

FireRed & LeafGreen arc

Poli's Damp Ability combined with Deoxys's use of Skill Swap enabled Red to counter Carr's exploding Forretress in the FireRed & LeafGreen arc. Poli was used to battle against Carr’s Steelix in Put Your Beast Foot Forward. Poli sends a Focus Punch at Steelix, sending it flying. Carr tries to counter with Steelix's Iron Tail, but Poli simply catches it in his hands, using Mind Reader to predict the attack. Poli then lifts Steelix into the air by its tail and smashes it into the ground.

Emerald arc

In The Final Battle VIII, Poli joined forces with Gold's Polibo while battling against Guile Hideout. After saving Emerald and his Dusclops from Jirachi's Doom Desire attack, Poli used Double Team to confuse Guile Hideout so that Polibo could get a chance to sneak closer and attack. Although Guile Hideout tried to send his Walrein and Masquerain to attack the Tadpole and Frog Pokémon, they simply threw them away and attacked Guile Hideout directly, breaking his armor.

Personality and characteristics

Being Red's first Pokémon, Poli has a strong relationship with his Trainer. Due to all the time they have spent together they can formulate plans without the use of words, which Red says they used to use to escape from bullies. Poli cares deeply for Red, saving him from drowning by evolving on two separate occasions. Poli has good battling skills, even though he often loses the battles he participates in.
