The Pokémon League Reception Gate (Japanese: ポケモンリーグうけつけゲート Pokémon League Reception Gate) is a large gate in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver located in Kanto to the west of Route 22. The building serves as the Gym Badge checkpoint for both Kanto and Johto Trainers in these games.

This gate is named the Pokémon League Front Gate (Japanese: ポケモンリーグしょうめんゲート Pokémon League Front Gate) in Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen, where it simply contains the Boulder Badge checkpoint and connects Routes 22 and 23.

Description

Trainers entering Kanto from Johto via Routes 26 and 27 are forced to enter this building from the south. Here, they are stopped by a Pokémon League official and must present the eight Johto Gym Badges before they can advance. Ahead of the guardpost is a four-way intersection of hallways; however, only the north hallway leading to Victory Road and Indigo Plateau is initially open. The east hallway, leading to Route 22 and Viridian City, opens up once the Pokémon League Reception Gate is entered from the Route 22 side. When the gate is opened from the Route 22 side, the player can travel between Johto and Kanto on foot, without taking the S.S. Aqua or the Magnet Train. The west hallway, leading to Route 28 and Mt. Silver, is opened by Professor Oak once Ethan, KrisC or LyraHGSS collect all eight Kanto Gym Badges.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Janine will appear here every evening between 4 PM and 6 PM after being defeated and will give Ethan or Lyra her phone number in order to call her for a rematch.

In Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen, the Pokémon League Front Gate serves as the Boulder Badge checkpoint and the connector between Routes 22 and 23. It is not a four-way intersection, unlike its Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver incarnations.

Significance

The Pokémon League Reception Gate replaced Route 23 in many ways in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In Generation I and FireRed and LeafGreen, Route 22 led to Route 23 to the north through the Pokémon League Front Gate and the Gym Badge checkpoints were scattered throughout Route 23, with the exception of the Boulder Badge checkpoint, which is located in the Pokémon League Front Gate. The guards analyzed the player to check how many Gym Badges he/she had got, and if the player had the required Gym Badge in his/her possession, he would be allowed to go through until the next checkpoint, until all checkpoints are cleared.

This changed in Generation II and HeartGold and SoulSilver as the Gym Badge checkpoints were consolidated into a single checkpoint located inside the Pokémon League Reception Gate, at the hallway straight from Route 26. This may explain why Route 23 shrunk into an extremely short road in Generation II, which then became part of Indigo Plateau itself in HeartGold and SoulSilver, causing Route 23 to no longer exist (although unused data for it still exists in the programming code).
