| The prospect of not knowing its own soul, and living its life confined in a research lab, does not sit well with the bio-engineered Mewtwo. "Behold my powers! I am the strongest Pokémon in the world," proclaims Mewtwo as it begins a horrific psychic attack on the lab. The Pokémon's amazing powers are beyond comprehension, and within moments, the compound and the entire Island is reduced to a flaming mound of smoldering rubble. | | The prospect of not knowing its own soul, and living its life confined in a research lab, does not sit well with the bio-engineered Mewtwo. | Since there are no Pokémon tears this day, and only rough seas, the trainers and their Pokémon decide to seek out their destinies, and leap into the heart of the torrent to face the unknown challenges ahead. Ash and friends watch as the other trainers leave, but they have no means to get there themselves. As if reading their minds, a mysterious Viking ship appears out of the darkness to ferry our heroes across the water. | | Since there are no Pokémon tears this day, and only rough seas, the trainers and their Pokémon decide to seek out their destinies, and leap into the heart of the torrent to face the unknown challenges ahead. Pokémon the First Movie Trading Cards was a set of Pokémon-themed trading cards manufactured by Topps in 1999. There were 72 cards in total: 41 cards featuring scenes from Mewtwo Strikes Back, 18 cards featuring scenes from Pikachu's Vacation, 12 evolution cards, and a checklist. In addition, there were 12 die-cut embossed evolution cards and 18 sticker cards, however, these were secret "chase cards" and are not included on the checklist.
Cards were sold in randomly distributed packets of eight in the 'Topps Blue Edition' but in five for the 'Topps Black Edition'. One card in each packet, chosen at random, would be a foil card. The foil card could be any of the 72 regular cards, including the checklist itself.

Trivia
- One of the cards from Mewtwo Strikes Back names Donphan as "Donfan", probably due to its trademarked Japanese name and the fact that Gold and Silver weren't out in North America yet. It was later corrected in the 'Topps Black Edition' cards.
- The cards from Pikachu's Vacation name Marill as "Pikablu" and Snubbull as "Buru". This contradicts later promotional items for the movie, such as the short's novelization, which use the final English names for these Pokémon. The names were later corrected in the 'Topps Black Edition', but spelt Snubbull as "Snubble".
- "Buru" can be considered a transliteration of Snubbull's Japanese name, ブルー Bull.
- Many cards, such as #32 "The Battle Renewed", feature scenes from the original theatrical version of the film, not the kanzenban edition that included scenes that were specifically reanimated for North American audiences. This is likely a result of the cards being created before the English version of the movie was completed, considering the cards also did not feature finalised names for Donphan, Snubbull, and Marill.
