Pokémon Tretta Safari (Japanese: ポケモントレッタサファリ) was a special variant of the main Pokémon Tretta arcade game that distributed promotional Tretta only available from Pokémon Tretta Safari machines.

Information

Unlike regular Pokémon Tretta machines, which could be found in various store chains and arcades across Japan, Pokémon Tretta Safari machines were only present at planned events. Players could experience Tretta Safari for the first time at Pokémon Centers as part of the Autumn Pokémon Tretta Event, which ran from October 18 to October 26, 2014. The machines were present at several later events. Details of these events are as follows:

• At two venues hosting the Pokémon Trading Card Game Battle Festa 2014: Sunshine City Bunka Kaikan, Tokyo on November 1 and 2, 2014, and at Intex Osaka, Osaka on November 16, 2014.
• As part of the 41st Next Generation World Hobby Fair, held at the Nagoya Dome, Nagoya on January 18, 2015; at Makuhari Messe, Chiba on January 24 and 25, 2015; at the Fukuoka Yahoo! Japan Dome, Fukuoka on February 1, 2015; and at the Kyocera Dome Osaka, Osaka on February 8, 2015.
• At Yomiuriland Nittere Ranran Hall, Tokyo on March 21 and 22, 2015.
• At Space World, Kitakyushu on April 4, 2015.
• At the Makomanai Ice Arena, Sapporo on April 11 and 12, 2015.
• At participating Pokémon Centers between April 25 and May 13, 2015.
• As part of the USUI Kids Expo, held at the USUI department store, Fukushima between May 2 and 6, 2015.
• At three venues hosting the Pokémon Trading Card Game Rayquaza Mega Battle: Nagoya Trade & Industry Center, Nagoya on May 5, 2015; at Makuhari Messe, Chiba on May 9 and 10, 2015; and at Intex Osaka, Osaka on May 31, 2015.
• At the 2015 Tokyo Toy Show, held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center, Tokyo on June 20 and 21, 2015.
• In all Namco arcades from July 25 through to September 2015.
• As part of the Pokémon Tretta Ultimate Challenge Tour, held at Aeon Mall Asahikawa West, Hokkaido on August 1, 2015; at iias Sapporo, Hokkaido on August 2, 2015; at Seven Town Azusawa, Itabashi, Tokyo on August 9, 2015; at Aeon Mall Kashiihama, Fukuoka on August 15, 2015; at Aeon Mall Fukuoka on August 16, 2015; at Shopping Plaza Kamagaya, Chiba on August 23, 2015; at Aspia Akashi, Hyōgo on August 29, 2015; and at Ito-Yokado Ario, Yao, Osaka on August 30, 2015.
• As part of the Pokémon Center Summer Festival in Centrair, held at Chūbu Centrair International Airport between August 10 and 12, 2015.

Gameplay

Tretta Safari incorporates two modes: Search Mode and Safari Mode. Search Mode in Tretta Safari is the same as Search Mode on regular Tretta machines, in which the player can cycle between the presented locations to search for Pokémon. There are four locations in Tretta Safari: Marsh and Rockface are exclusive to Tretta Safari, whereas Waterfront and Forest have appeared as locations on the regular machines, although with a different appearance. Once the player has selected their search radius and encountered each Pokémon in each location, Safari Mode begins.

Safari Mode is similar to Battle Mode, albeit the player does not use any Pokémon to confront the opposing team of three Pokémon. Instead, the player throws sweets by pressing the buttons on the bottom section of the console in attempt to increase the Catch Gauge of each Pokémon, emulating the action of throwing Bait or Pokéblocks in some Safari Zones in the core series. Much like the type attributes of moves, the sweets available to use in Safari Mode have different levels of effectiveness on different Pokémon and therefore determine how easily the Catch Gauge of those Pokémon can be increased. There are three types of sweets: Red Sweets (Japanese: あかいおかし), Green Sweets (Japanese: みどりのおかし), and Yellow Sweets (Japanese: きいろいおかし). These can be cycled by using the console dial. Once selected, the player has 9 seconds to throw sweets. Once the time is up, the player will be prompted to press the Poké Ball button when the presented line reaches the target point, much in the same way as summoning an Extra Attacker on regular machines. Safari Balls will then be thrown at the Pokémon, and a successfully caught Pokémon will be dispensed from the machine. If more than one is caught, the player can choose which one to dispense, and choose to dispense any more by inserting another ¥100 for each Pokémon.
