Pokémon: Magikarp Jump takes place in Hoppy Town, where people train Magikarp and compete in Leagues to see whose can jump the highest. The player can raise one Magikarp at a time. Feeding and training a Magikarp raises its Jump Power (JP), which determines its level. Performance in League battles depends mostly on JP but can be affected by other factors. A Magikarp's maximum level is determined by the player's trainer rank, which can be increased by winning League battles. When the player's Magikarp is lost, reaches its maximum level and retires, or is forced to retire, the player must fish for a new Magikarp.

Friendship Items
{| class="roundy" style="background:#firered color; border:3px solid #firered color light"
When each of these Friendship Items is bought or obtained, the corresponding Pokémon will appear in the pond. When its skill can be used, a light bulb will appear above it, and the player may tap the Pokémon to use its skill. Each Pokémon then requires a certain amount of time to recover before its skill may be used again. The player may spend Support Candies to improve the Pokémon's skill.

Most of these events may occur randomly after training or battling. During some of these events, the player has a choice whether to take a risk; if they do, a positive outcome or a negative outcome may occur, and if they decline, they will gain JP for going home and getting some rest.

Currencies
The game has three main currencies: Coins, Diamonds, and Exchange Tickets.
Coins
Coins are the most abundant currency, and can be obtained from various sources such as leveling up Magikarp, League battles, random encounter events, items from Support Pokémon, sunken treasure items on the home screen, or achievement rewards.
Coins can be spent in the Coin Shop in Town, where food and training regimens can be unlocked and upgraded.

Diamonds
Diamonds are the game's primary premium currency. Up to 5,000 Diamonds can be purchased through microtransactions, after which the game will no longer allow purchases. Diamonds can also be obtained for free from sources such as Trainer Rank rewards, League battles, sunken treasure, or achievement rewards.
Diamonds can be spent on various items or services, such as:
* Retrying when fishing for a new Magikarp.
* Friendship Items to unlock certain Support Pokémon.
* Decorations, which provide permanent boosts, such as increasing JP or Coin gain from certain sources.
* One-time use items, which can restore timed resources at a faster rate or immediately.
* Coin bags, which grant an amount of Coins based on the size of the bag and the player's current Trainer Rank.

Exchange Tickets
Exchange Tickets are the game's secondary premium currency. Unlike Diamonds, Exchange Tickets are impossible to obtain by free means - they can only be obtained through microtransactions. For every 1 Diamond purchased, the player receives 1 Exchange Ticket.
Exchange Tickets can be redeemed in the Shop's Exchange Office for various rewards. One of these rewards is the Diamond Miner, which grants the player 100 Diamonds per day in perpetuity once obtained.

Trainer Tips
* You can check the special effects you're getting from your Decorations by checking the Status section in your Records.
* The effects of any Decorations you've gotten will always be active—even if they aren't placed in your pond!
* You can make a backup of your data just in case the worst should happen. Then you can continue your game, even on another device!
* There are lots of random encounters waiting for you! Whether they'll be good or bad, well, that's where the random part comes in!
* Support Pokémon might show up to cheer you on in league battles. Your Magikarp's JP will get a temporary boost.
* If you increase the rank of your food items or training regimens to a certain point, you can get Support Candies as an extra bonus!
* A Magikarp's pattern becomes clear when it has grown about two-thirds of the way to its max level!
* Be sure to raise your Magikarp to its max level! Then you'll get a Motivation Bonus when it retires!

* The first six Leagues are named after Poké Balls.
* Elements of Pokémon: Magikarp Jump were directly lifted from Survive! Mola mola!, the first game ever published by developer SELECT BUTTON inc. In Survive! Mola mola!, the player raises an ocean sunfish (Mola mola) and has to navigate it through various perils.
* The first eight Leagues are named after Poké Balls.
* The Magikarp Biscuit appears to be based on taiyaki.
* The number "129" on the Jump Counter is Magikarp's number in the National Pokédex.
* The Jump Counter training option resembles one of the Pokémon Stadium mini-games, Magikarp's Splash.
* Despite the two-thirds claim in one Trainer Tip, a Magikarp's pattern does not become clear until reaching three-fourths of its max level.
* Although the Starmie Bubbler decoration was only added in version 1.1.0, it could be seen on the Decorations section, on the How to Play setting, since version 1.0.
* Although it is far past the amount required to beat the final opponent, the game will switch the prefix to T if a Magikarp's Jump Power reaches 1000G, and will cap after reaching 12.9T.
** This maximum cap again references Magikarp's National Pokédex number, 129.
* Many of the Magikarp in the game resemble real-life types of koi. For example, the "Orange Forehead" Magikarp resembles the Tanchō type; The "Calico Orange/Gold" Magikarp resembles the Matsuba type; The "Calico Orange/White/Black" Magikarp resembles the Showa type; and the "Calico Orange/white" and "Calico White/orange" Magikarp resemble the Kōhaku type of koi.

Plot and gameplay

When each of these Friendship Items is bought or obtained, the corresponding Pokémon will appear in the pond. When its skill can be used, a light bulb will appear above it, and the player may tap the Pokémon to use its skill. Each Pokémon then requires a certain amount of time to recover before its skill may be used again. The player may spend Magikarp Jump Support Candy.png Support Candies to improve the Pokémon's skill.

Other items

  • Magikarp Jump Everstone.pngEverstone — The player begins the game with one Everstone, which can be cracked and broken by tapping Magikarp in quick succession. When broken, Magikarp can be evolved into Gyarados on reaching Level 20 or higher. This will cause the Magikarp to retire, and a new one must be caught.
  • Pond Booster — After completing the Master League, the Pond Booster will appear in the pond. Its rank can gradually be increased by spending Coins, with each rank boosting JP gains by one percent.

Random encounter events

Most of these events may occur randomly after training or battling. During some of these events, the player has a choice whether to take a risk; if they do, a positive outcome or a negative outcome may occur, and if they decline, they will gain JP for going home and getting some rest.

Currencies

The game has three main currencies: Coins, Diamonds, and Exchange Tickets.

Coins

Magikarp Jump Coin.png

Coins are the most abundant currency, and can be obtained from various sources such as leveling up Magikarp, League battles, random encounter events, items from Support Pokémon, sunken treasure items on the home screen, or achievement rewards.

Coins can be spent in the Coin Shop in Town, where food and training regimens can be unlocked and upgraded.

Diamonds

Magikarp Jump Diamond.png

Diamonds are the game's primary premium currency. Up to 5,000 Diamonds can be purchased through microtransactions, after which the game will no longer allow purchases. Diamonds can also be obtained for free from sources such as Trainer Rank rewards, League battles, sunken treasure, or achievement rewards.

Diamonds can be spent on various items or services, such as:

  • Retrying when fishing for a new Magikarp.
  • Friendship Items to unlock certain Support Pokémon.
  • Decorations, which provide permanent boosts, such as increasing JP or Coin gain from certain sources.
  • One-time use items, which can restore timed resources at a faster rate or immediately.
  • Coin bags, which grant an amount of Coins based on the size of the bag and the player's current Trainer Rank.

Exchange Tickets

Magikarp Jump Exchange Ticket.png

Exchange Tickets are the game's secondary premium currency. Unlike Diamonds, Exchange Tickets are impossible to obtain by free means - they can only be obtained through microtransactions. For every 1 Diamond purchased, the player receives 1 Exchange Ticket.

Exchange Tickets can be redeemed in the Shop's Exchange Office for various rewards. One of these rewards is the Diamond Miner, which grants the player 100 Diamonds per day in perpetuity once obtained.

Trainer Tips

  • You can check the special effects you're getting from your Decorations by checking the Status section in your Records.
  • The effects of any Decorations you've gotten will always be active—even if they aren't placed in your pond!
  • You can make a backup of your data just in case the worst should happen. Then you can continue your game, even on another device!
  • There are lots of random encounters waiting for you! Whether they'll be good or bad, well, that's where the random part comes in!
  • Support Pokémon might show up to cheer you on in league battles. Your Magikarp's JP will get a temporary boost.
  • If you increase the rank of your food items or training regimens to a certain point, you can get Support Candies as an extra bonus!
  • A Magikarp's pattern becomes clear when it has grown about two-thirds of the way to its max level!
  • Be sure to raise your Magikarp to its max level! Then you'll get a Motivation Bonus when it retires!

Trivia

  • Elements of Pokémon: Magikarp Jump were directly lifted from Survive! Mola mola!, the first game ever published by developer SELECT BUTTON inc. In Survive! Mola mola!, the player raises an ocean sunfish (Mola mola) and has to navigate it through various perils.
  • The first eight Leagues are named after Poké Balls.
  • The Magikarp Biscuit appears to be based on taiyaki.
  • The number "129" on the Jump Counter is Magikarp's number in the National Pokédex.
  • The Jump Counter training option resembles one of the Pokémon Stadium mini-games, Magikarp's Splash.
  • Despite the two-thirds claim in one Trainer Tip, a Magikarp's pattern does not become clear until reaching three-fourths of its max level.
  • Although the Starmie Bubbler decoration was only added in version 1.1.0, it could be seen on the Decorations section, on the How to Play setting, since version 1.0.
  • Although it is far past the amount required to beat the final opponent, the game will switch the prefix to T if a Magikarp's Jump Power reaches 1000G, and will cap after reaching 12.9T.
    • This maximum cap again references Magikarp's National Pokédex number, 129.
  • Many of the Magikarp in the game resemble real-life types of koi.
