Characteristics

Defensively, Poison is one oe the better types to use. It's only common weakness is Earthquake, as the usage of Psychic-type moves dwindled greatly in generation IV, and even that weakness is easily solved by the many Bug/Poison and Grass/Poison type-combinations in the game, as well as the part-Flying Crobat and Weezing and Gengar, who both hold the Levitate trait. On the other hand, it resists itself, Bug, Fighting and Grass, giving it many common resistances, such as Aura Sphere, Megahorn and Close Combat. Moreso, Poison-types tend to hold great status and support moves, such as Haze, Toxic Spikes, Will-o-Wisp and most of all, Toxic. They are also immune to Poison and Toxic Spikes themselfs, giving them an oppertunity to absorb statuses as well. Therefor, Koga words of "confusion, sleep, poison" describe the Poison-type very well.

Offensively, though, Poison is likely the worsed of all types. It is only super-effective against one type, Grass, of which many hold Poison-type of their own, making the neutral to Posion, therefor even when countering the Grass-type, Ice and Fire are much more useful. Also, every pokemon weak to Poison by now is also weak to Flying, giving little reason to preffer Poison moves over Flying-typed ones. On the other hand, Poison is resisted by itself, Rock, Ghost Ground and immuned by Steel ,whom are also immune to poisoning, making resistances to Poison by far more common than weaknesses to it. Furthermore, Poison does not offerany additional coverage with an other type, unlike the Normal-type, who, despite beeing effective against no type, combines very well with Water and Ghost.

Trivia

• Acid is the only damage dealing Poison-type attack that does not have a chance to poison the opponent.
• With the exception of Arceus holding a Toxic Plate, there has yet to be a Poison-type legendary Pokémon.
• Poison is the first type encountered in National Pokédex order, an honor it shares with the Template:Type2.
• Posion has the dubious honor of being one of three types that isn't doubly super effective against any Pokémon because it is only super effective against one type, the Template:Type2. It shares this trait with the Template:Type2 which is only effective against itself, and the Template:Type2, which isn't super effective against anything. It should also be noted that in Generation I, Poison was super effective against Template:Type2s, making Paras, and Parasect doubly weak to Poison.
• Poison was the most common type in Generation I.
  • Almost two thirds of the Poison-type Pokémon are from Generation I.
• As of yet, no pure Poison-type Pokémon have been introduced in an even-numbered generation.
• Gulpin is the only pure Poison-type Pokémon that is not colored blue or purple.
