Pinsir (Japanese: カイロス Kailios) is a Bug-type Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Pinsir is a bipedal Pokémon that has a brown body with a large pair of white horns or pincers that are dotted with small spikes. Pinsir has short legs with three toes each and skinny, three-clawed arms. Its mouth has long, flat teeth that are arranged horizontally rather than vertically. Pinsir is cold-blooded.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Pinsir's horns/pincers have enough crushing power to shatter thick logs and allow it to lift things twice its own weight. Its horns are very flexible, and are capable of being launched downwards.

Behavior

Because this Pokémon hates the cold, it digs itself underground burrows that it can sleep in during frigid nights. They will also sleep in treetops when it is cold, so that they are well hidden. If it is exposed to cold for any extended period of time, it will become sluggish and lethargic, and will eventually be unable to move at all. In battle, Pinsir are violent Pokémon, using their thorny antlers to grip at prey. Pinsir will attempt to guillotine captured prey, but will toss prey that cannot be crushed.

Habitat

This Pokémon lives in temperate jungles and forests, making its home in and around the trees, sleeping usually hidden underground amongst the roots to ward of the cold of night. Pinsir have also been known to sleep on treetops and on canopies when weather is permitting. Pinsir is typically a rarity of the forest, but it has been imported into Kanto’s Safari Zone and the National Park of Johto as a result of Bug-Catching Contests. The forests of Sinnoh and Unova also offer good habitats for Pinsir.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Much like Heracross, Pinsir seem to enjoy tree sap. As a result they often compete with Heracross over trees with the best sap. Pinsir also eats prey, gripping it with its pincers until the prey is torn in half.

Trivia

Origin

It is based on a stag beetle, possibly the Prosopocoilus inclinatus, a popular beetle used in insect fighting.

Name origin

Pinsir is a corruption of pincer, referring to the claws on its head. It could also involve the title sir.

Kailios may be a combination of the Greek letter Χ (カイ kai) and cross (referring to its scissor-like horns). Alternatively, it may be a combination of 傀 kai (large), 魁偉 kaii (brawny), or 刈 kai (cut) combined with κοριός korios (Greek for bug).
