Release information
This card was released as a promotional card. In Japan, it was released as part of a special expansion sheet available at the 7th Next Generation World Hobby Fair held in December 1997. The English version of the card was one of four possible Wizards Black Star Promos that one could receive by buying a ticket to the theatrical release of Mewtwo Strikes Back. This print has a gold foil stamp in the top right corner that reads "Kids WB Presents Pokémon The First Movie". An unknown amount of these prints has the gold foil stamp on the opposite corner. This card was reprinted in the Red Deck of the Japanese Quick Starter Gift Set. A French version of the Wizards Promo printed on glossy card stock was included in the July 2000 issue of Gotta Magazine in Japan, alongside an English Mew.
Trivia
- The character illustration is the same used on the Japanese Toyota promotional Pikachu.
- As the Japanese version of this card was distributed as part of an expansion sheet, it, along with Mewtwo and Mew are often regarded as unofficial additions to the Vending Machine cards collection, dubbed "Series 00".
Origin
Recharge's Japanese name is that of Charge, a move later introduced in the Generation III Pokémon games that Pikachu can learn as a Pichu via breeding. Thunderbolt is also a move in the Pokémon games that Pikachu can learn. This card's Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Red and Blue, though it is slightly reworded.
