Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Pawniard and its evolution.
    • The types it has are coincidentally the two types introduced in Generation II.
    • Due to their typing, Pawniard and its evolution are also the only Pokémon that have double resistance to Ghost-type moves.
  • Pawniard and Bisharp are the only Pokémon that can have Defiant as a non-Hidden Ability.
  • Pawniard is the only Pokémon that evolves at level 52.

Origin

It looks and acts similar to a traditional Japanese bandit, and specifically that of lackys and lower members, with features resembling ashigaru foot soldier based armor. It may also have gained origin from the Kaijin style of Japanese monster movies, involving a humanoid creature that acts as a villain. There is also a resemblance to the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series' suited heroes.

Name origin

Pawniard may be a combination of pawn (the most basic piece in chess or the undisclosed name of a low level operative in an organization) and poignard or poniard (a lightweight dagger). It may also involve palliard (beggar or thief).

Komatana may be a combination of 駒 koma (a piece in Shogi), 細切れ komagire (small pieces), and 刀 katana (sword) or 小刀 kogatana (knife).
