Synopsis
Plot
At Sinnoh Route 205, the Sinnoh Pokémon Association Chairman begins to brief Diamond and Pearl on their mission, but is quickly interrupted by the enthusiastic Dr. Footstep who has been collecting footprints ever since the beginning of their journey, slowing everyone down much to Pearl's irritation. The Chairman is confused why Dr. Footstep is tagging along, to which Diamond reveals Gi the Regigigas to the shocked Chairman. Diamond explains that ever since Gi helped resolve the crisis with Dialga and Palkia, it refused to come out of its Poké Ball, so he had invited Dr. Footstep to read Gi's thoughts.

On 205, the Sinnoh Pokémon Association Chairman begins to brief Diamond and Pearl about why he formed their small group. Before he can explain, an enthusiastic Dr. Footstep exclaims that he has gained another footprint, much to Pearl's annoyance. When the Chairman asks why he's with them, Diamond shocks the Chairman by revealing the Regigigas in his Poké Ball. Diamond states that he has nicknamed Regigigas "Reg", but it refuses to listen to him and come out of its Poké Ball despite helping them at the Spear Pillar. Since it wouldn't listen to him, Diamond invited Dr. Footstep in the hope that he would be able to read Reg's thoughts.

The Chairman proceeds to brief the two boys on why he had asked to join forces: based on Charon's notebook and the details of various legendary Pokémon in Sinnoh, he guessed that Charon is seeking to obtain all the legendary Pokémon and wishes to stop him. One of these Pokémon is Rotom, and the boys reveal that they were asked to investigate Rotom by Professor Rowan as they had previously encountered it before. Dr. Footstep is disinterested in Rotom as it has no footprints for him to collect, and Pearl suggests that he and Diamond go alone, shaking off the two men which have begun to unnerve him.
Pearl asks the Chairman to finish what he was originally going to say about their mission. The Chairman states that with the notebook they managed to get from Charon, they know that he is after the Legendary and Mythical Pokémon of Sinnoh: Heatran, Darkrai, Cresselia, Manaphy, Shaymin, and Rotom. The Chairman states that he wants to protect the Pokémon from Charon and hopes that they can work together to do so. Pearl notes that Professor Rowan has asked them to investigate Rotom because they had apparently encountered it before. Upon looking at the section about Rotom in Charon's notebook, Dr. Footstep becomes disinterested in Rotom because it doesn't appear to have footprints and decides to stay behind and wait. The Chairman decides to go with the boys, but Pearl states that since they were the ones who were asked to meet Rotom in addition to their previous encounter with it, they should go on ahead instead. The Chairman agrees and sends the two off with Charon's notebook in hand.

Later that night, the two Trainers stand outside the Old Chateau, remarking on the mansion's spooky state. Pearl annoyedly reminds Diamond that he had volunteered them for the search for Rotom, forcing them to journey into hallways filled with Gastly that torment them during night-time when Rotom appears. The group makes their way to the television room where Rotom reveals itself; Diamond's Kit and Pearl's Dighiko attempt to attack but as a result of Rotom's Ghost typing and ability in Levitate, their attacks fail. Rotom mischeviously shocks them before escaping to the Galactic building in Eterna City. Finding a Secret Key with the word "Eterna" on it, the boys decide that heading to Eterna should be their next move.
At the Old Chateau, Diamond and Pearl note that the building is as creepy as it usually is. Pearl states that although the mansion is stated to be haunted by ghosts, it's really the work of Rotom. Although Diamond worries if they'll be able to trick it again, Pearl reminds him that they are in this mess because Diamond bragged to Professor Rowan about their earlier battle with it. As they search, they berate having to search for Rotom at night due to the group of wild Gastly heckling them. They enter a room where a Pokémon waits inside a television. Pearl checks the notebook to confirm that the creature really is Rotom.

At the restored building, the two eventually find their way to a Secret Room, which the Secret Key unlocks, revealing five strange appliances with odd-looking motors. Rotom appears to possess the washing machine, changing its form and attacking the boys with Hydro Pump. Before Diamond's Tru can attack, Rotom switches to the oven and attacks with Overheat instead. Pearl, reading the notes deciphered and copied from Charon's notebook, realizes that Rotom's special ability is to possess appliances with its plasma body, allowing it to change its type constantly and gain different attacks. Going into the fan, Rotom blasts the boys out of the building with Air Slash. The boys try to read up on its various forms before Rotom goes into the fridge and attacks them with Blizzard, freezing Tru's special Razor Leaf before it can hit. Rotom finally goes into the lawnmower and begins maniacally chasing the boys around the lawn. Pearl has a brainwave and leaves Diamond to hold Rotom back, returning to the Old Chateau to retrieve Rotom's television set where he hopes Rotom can be subdued in.
Rotom quickly exits the television and reveals its true form. Pearl has Diglett use Earthquake while Diamond has Kit use Slam. Both moves do not affect Rotom, revealing that it is a Ghost with the Ability Levitate in addition to it being an Electric. Rotom moves towards Diamond and Pearl and shocks them before leaving and giggling at them. Pearl manages to see that it fled to a building in Eterna City and tells Diamond that they need to chase after it. Diamond quickly finds a key next to him with the words "Secret Key" and "Eterna" written on it. They guess that it has something to do with the building Rotom went into and head off.

Upon returning, Pearl is surprised to find Diamond clad in his boxers, napping on the ground with Rotom where a design of Diamond's face has been cut into the grass. Roused awake, Diamond explains that Rotom had stopped chasing him to reveal the design of his face cut into the lawn, and he realized that Rotom was playing with them all along by showing off its abilities. Rotom then used its other forms to make snacks for Diamond and clean his clothes, and promptly fell asleep afterwards. As Rotom wakes up, Pearl marvels at the intrigue of Pokémon and their abilities and decides that Rotom should be strong enough to protect itself from Charon. However, Rotom decides to join the boys, and they accept.
After performing a joke to pass the time, Diamond and Pearl approach the Team Galactic Eterna Building, which is currently being renovated. Although reluctant to go inside, Diamond becomes determined because Rotom shares his love of robot anime, which annoys Pearl because he thinks there are better reasons to be determined. Pearl quickly sneaks through the corridors with Diamond sluggishly following him. When Pearl tells Diamond to be more stealthy, Rotom appears and fires an attack at him. Rotom runs away again, leading the two into a room labeled "Secret Room". Assuming the Secret Key must work in the Secret Room, Pearl uses the key to unlock the door, although it causes a stream of electricity to shock his hand.

At the Sendoff Spring, Marley appears with Oak's Letter in her hands, and beyond the spring, Paka and Uji are revealed to be alive in the Distortion World, having been trapped in the anomalous dimension where they know no regularity in time or space. Hiding from Giratina, they remark that the only thing they know is that they have been constantly evading the large Pokémon: apparently the only inhabitant of the strange realm. A vision of Eterna City appears, where Giratina moves through a void and changes into its Altered Forme, smashing the Eterna's statue to pieces as it lands in its place.
They enter the room, which contains five different appliances with strange motors attached to their backs. Rotom appears from the ceiling and jumps into the washing machine. The washing machine takes on a similar appearance to Rotom and it begins attacking them with Hydro Pump. They wonder how it could use the move now when it couldn't before and guess that it must be because Rotom possessed the washing machine and became a Water. Diamond brings out Tru to try and counter it, but Rotom possesses the microwave oven and attacks them with Overheat. Pearl quickly realizes that since Rotom is made out of plasma, it can possess appliances and gain special moves based on the appliance it's possessing.

On Route 205, the Sinnoh Pokémon Association Chairman begins to brief Diamond and Pearl about why he formed their small group.
