Red runs to the Pewter Gym's main arena to see a familiar face, Blue. He and his Charmeleon are battling in the ring. After watching the battle, Red registers, and prepares for his first battle against a muscular Trainer and his Graveler. Pika stubbornly refuses to battle for Red, as a result, he is forced to send out Poli to battle his opponent. The muscular Trainer predicts an easy win due to Poli's lack of health. However, Red comes up with a strategy to take out his opponent, using one-hit knockouts and complimentary moves. He uses Water Gun on the Graveler, then follows up with Ice Beam, freezing and shattering the opponent's Pokémon.

Using this strategy, Red battles several more Trainers using only Poli and Saur, and they are soon facing the Gym Leader, Brock. When the last battle begins, Saur and Poli are too exhausted to continue and Pika still refuses to fight. Brock orders his Onix to use Rock Throw on Pika, who dodges every rock except one, infuriating him and causing him to attack Red. Believing Red's wins have been nothing but dumb luck, Brock angrily orders Onix to use his most powerful move, Skull Bash. The rock snake forms a twister before launching himself towards Pika. Diving, Red rescues him just in time. It leaves Pika with a wonderful feeling of being loved and has flashbacks of when Red asked him to be friends. Suddenly, he launches a huge electric attack at Onix, which destroys him, earning Red a victory. Admiring his new Boulder Badge, Red tries to befriend Pika, but just as before, he pulls a dirty trick on him by shocking him.
