Biology
Biology
Onix resembles a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. There is a rocky spine on its head and a pair of black eyes right beneath it. This Pokémon has a magnet in its brain that serves as an internal compass. Its body absorbs many hard objects, making its body very solid. As it grows older, it becomes more rounded and smoother, eventually becoming similar to black diamonds.
Onix is a Pokémon composed of a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. Its length makes it the tallest Rock Pokémon. It has black eyes and a rounded snout. On top of its head is a rocky spine. As it grows older, it becomes more rounded and smoother, eventually becoming similar to black diamonds. Inside its brain is a magnet that serves as an internal compass, guiding Onix wherever they need to go and prevents them from getting lost while digging.

Onix tunnels under the ground at over fifty miles per hour, which causes tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes a long way. The massive, winding tunnels it leaves behind are used as homes by Diglett. Onix loves to eat the large boulders it encounters while burrowing underground. As seen in the Pokémon Stadium series, Onix is capable of rotating its head, or any part of their body, a full 360 degrees. It is a very aggressive Pokémon that will constantly attack humans and Pokémon when it is in pain, as seen in the anime. Onix can be found in mountains and List of Pokémon by habitat, though it prefers underground tunnels with little light.
Onix tunnels under the ground at over 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, which causes tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes a long way. Hard objects encountered while tunneling are absorbed into its body, which makes it very sturdy. It also consumes the boulders for food. As seen in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Onix can be separated from its body segments in battle and be fine later on, either regenerating or reattaching to its body segments. It is said that an Onix that lives for about 100 years will evolve into a Steelix after its composition becomes more diamond-like. It can be found in mountains and List of Pokémon by habitat.

Origin
Origin
Onix is most likely based on a combination of a snake and earthworm. It may also been based on the European dragon, a type of dragon that has been presented as limbless and burrowing.
Onix's design may be a visual pun on a rock python or an earthworm. Its great size could have been inspired by the Mongolian death worm, an earthworm-like creature noted for its colossal length (compared to regular worms) of up to 7 feet. The Onix lifestyle, living underground and ingesting massive amounts of soil while tunneling, is much closer to the earthworm lifestyle than the snake lifestyle. Earthworms eat soil and digest the organic material it contains (plant matter, living protozoa, rotifers, nematodes, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms).

Onix (Japanese: イワーク Iwark) is a dual-type Rock/Ground Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat.

(Specifics may differ in past games. Refer to Game data→Evolution data for more details).

Biology

Onix is a Pokémon composed of a giant chain of gray boulders that become smaller towards the tail. Its length makes it the tallest Rock-type Pokémon.

Onix tunnels under the ground at over 50 miles (80 kilometers) per hour, which causes tremors and a terrifying roar that echoes a long way. Hard objects encountered while tunneling are absorbed into its body, which makes it very sturdy. It also consumes the boulders for food. The massive, winding tunnels it leaves behind are used as homes by Diglett. As seen in the Pokémon Stadium series, Onix is capable of rotating its head, or any part of its body, in a full 360 degrees. It is a very aggressive Pokémon that will constantly attack humans and other Pokémon when in pain, as seen in the anime. As seen in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Onix can be separated from its body segments in battle and be fine later on, either regenerating or reattaching to its body segments. It is said that an Onix that lives for about 100 years will evolve into a Steelix after its composition becomes more diamond-like. It can be found in mountains and caves.

Evolution

Onix evolves into Steelix.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Major appearances

Brock's Onix

Starting in Showdown in Pewter City, Brock used an Onix in his journeys in Kanto and Johto before giving it to his little brother, Forrest, for him to train in A Family That Battles Together Stays Together!. At some point before Grating Spaces!, it evolved into a Steelix.

Bruno's Onix

In To Master the Onixpected, Ash and his friends encountered a giant Onix. It was on a rampage until Bruno managed to pull a Sandslash out from two of its boulders. Bruno captured the Onix afterwards.

Crystal Onix

The Crystal Onix featured a special Onix whose body is made out of glass crystal. Ash and his friends helped a glass sculptor named Mateo search for it because Mateo believed it would help inspire him to be better at his craft.

Other

Onix debuted in Pokémon - I Choose You!, where it was used as the next Pokémon that a Trainer chose after his opponent's Gengar put their Nidorino to sleep with Hypnosis.

In Hello, Pummelo!, Drake used an Onix in the second round in the Orange League championship match against Ash. It battled Squirtle and was defeated.

In Tunnel Vision, multiple Onix were living in Onix Tunnel. They attacked anyone who attempted to pass through it. They were temporarily put to sleep by Jigglypuff's singing, but were eventually awakened by Team Rocket.

In Fight for the Light, Janina coated her Onix in wax for protection against Water attacks.

An Onix, dubbed "King Onix", appeared in Hooked on Onix. Team Rocket tricked King Onix into thinking Ash and his friends were going to destroy his kingdom. When Ash managed to convince King Onix that he and his friends weren't bad by defeating it in a battle, Team Rocket tried to steal the royal Rock Snake Pokémon, but their plan was foiled, as usual.

In Shapes of Things to Come, Roark used an Onix during his Gym battle against Paul. It went up against his Elekid before being defeated by Chimchar. Onix can burrow as effortlessly through rock walls as it can through a sea of sand. Other Pokémon make their dens in the tunnels it leaves in its wake.

Evolution data

Onix evolves into Steelix when traded while holding a Metal Coat. Onix cannot evolve into Steelix in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen before the player obtains the National Pokédex, as its evolution will be interrupted. Onix also cannot evolve into Steelix in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, as Steelix is not present in those games. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, Onix evolves into Steelix when exposed to a Metal Coat.

Trivia

Origin

Onix's design may be a visual pun on a rock python or an earthworm. Its great size could have been inspired by the Mongolian death worm, an earthworm-like creature noted for its colossal length (compared to regular worms) of up to 7 feet. The Onix lifestyle, living underground and ingesting massive amounts of soil while tunneling, is much closer to the earthworm lifestyle than the snake lifestyle. Earthworms eat soil and digest the organic material it contains (plant matter, living protozoa, rotifers, nematodes, bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms).

Name origin

Onix may be derived from onyx (a mineral).

Iwark may be a combination of 岩 iwa (rock) and either ブルワーク bulwark or スネーク snake.
