Omastar (Japanese: オムスター Omstar) is a dual-type Rock/Water fossil Pokémon.

It evolves from Omanyte starting at level 40, after it is revived from a Helix Fossil.

Biology

Omastar is a fossil Pokémon no longer found in the wild, and must be resurrected from a Helix Fossil.

Physiology

Omastar has a heavy, pale-yellow, helix shell dotted with spikes. It has a sky-blue body with 10 tentacles (four of them are longer than the other six). Omastar has a squid-like beak and eyes with vertical-line pupils.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Most of Omastar's abilities are the same as Omanyte's, only stronger. Omastar can finally learn how to use Stone Edge. Like most fully-evolved Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior

Omastar, unlike Kabutops, is far more defensive. While Kabutops prefers to slice prey apart or swim after them, Omastar does not. Omastar has a high Special Attack suggesting that it prefers waiting for prey to come near it so it can attack. It is not as fierce as Kabutops and probably does not move as much either, preferring to stay rooted to a spot, waiting.

Habitat

The exact habitat of Omastar is unknown, but so far Helix Fossils are only found in the Kanto and Sinnoh regions, though some are also found on Unova's Twist Mountain.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Pokédex information indicates that Omastar would eat Shellder in the wild by cracking open their shells with sharp fangs and sucking out the insides.

Major appearances

Omastar first appeared in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon, alongside all the other Generation I Fossil Pokémon. They were sleeping under Grampa Canyon until a dynamite blast woke them up. The Water/Rock-typed Fossil Pokémon chased Ash Ketchum and Team Rocket until Aerodactyl showed up and scared them off.

Omastar also appeared in Fossil Fools, alongside its pre-evolved form Omanyte. These Pokémon were discovered to be living in the Ruins of Alph, but they moved into a museum.

Minor appearances

Dr. Yung uses a Mirage Omastar in The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon.

An Omastar appeared in Dealing With Defensive Types!.

Silver Once wrapped around its prey, it never lets go. It eats the prey by tearing at it with sharp fangs.

Stadium 2 Apparently, it cracked Shellder's shell with its sharp fangs and sucked out the insides.
Generation III

Trivia

  • Omastar originally had the name "Kargo," which, when taken with Omanyte's beta name "Ess", forms a misspelling of "escargot", which is French for snail.
  • While Omastar could learn Rollout by move tutor in Emerald, it cannot learn it in Platinum. The move can still be taught to an Omanyte, though.
    • The opposite is true regarding Mud-Slap; while Omastar cannot learn it in Emerald, it now can in Platinum.
  • Omastar has the highest Special Attack stat of any Template:Type2 or non-legendary Template:Type2 Pokémon.
  • Omastar is the only fossil that has been given a reason for extinction; its shell was too heavy for it to move, thus it starved to extinction.
    • This may also be a reference to the giant orthocone, ancestor to the modern octopus. The orthocone resembled an octopus but it had a long pointed shell that was slow and cumbersome.

Origin

It seems to be based on a type of ammonite.

Name origin

Omastar's name is a combination of オウムガイ ōmugai, the Japanese word for nautilus, and ammonite, both names of the creatures on which it is based, as well as star, referring to the shape of its body.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Amoroso From ammonite.
French Amonistar From ammonite and star.
Korean 암스타 Amseuta
Chinese (Taiwan) 多刺菊石獸 Duō Cì Jú Shí Shòu "Thorny ammonite beast".
