Plot

This book follows the plots of Abra and the Psychic Showdown, The Tower of Terror, and Haunter versus Kadabra.

Blurb

Ash has to defeat the Gym Leader Sabrina to earn a Marsh Badge. But only Ghost Pokémon are strong enough to beat her powerful Psychic Pokémon in battle. Now Ash and Pikachu have to spend a haunting night in Pokémon Tower to catch a spooky specter.

It won't be easy. Ghost Pokémon are tricky. But Ash isn't afraid of any ghosts. Nothing can stop him from becoming a Pokémon Master!

Abra and the Psychic Showdown

Ash and his friends arrive into Saffron City, in which Ash can receive his Marsh Badge. Ash is confident that Pikachu can beat Sabrina's Psychic Pokémon. As they arrive in the city, they are welcomed by a fanfare, having been declared as the one-millionth visitor to Saffron City. This is revealed to be a plot by Team Rocket to steal Pikachu, and they are sent to a sealed room by a Warp Tile. A little girl appears in a blue light, carrying Pikachu, and using psychic powers teleports them out. This little girl is revealed to be Sabrina's doll, and she is the reason why they escaped Team Rocket. Ash eagerly accepts Sabrina's challenge to a Gym Battle. Sabrina sends out her Abra and Ash sends out Pikachu. However, Abra is fast asleep, seemingly unable to battle. Pikachu uses Thundershock but Sabrina uses her telepathic powers to command Abra to teleport out of the way. This leads Abra to evolve into Kadabra.

Ash is still confident that Pikachu can beat the newly evolved Pokémon, however Kadabra's Confusion directs Pikachu's own electric attack on itself. Kadabra uses Psychic and Pikachu starts dancing as per Kadabra's telekinetic powers. Ash forfeits the match, seeing that Pikachu is unable to battle. As Ash and his friends prepare to leave the Gym, Sabrina has other ideas, and blocks their exits. With Ash and his friends trapped, a man appears out of nowhere, and teleports them outside the gym. He instructs them to leave Saffron City, which is indignant to. He wants the man to teach him telekinesis, however he is unable to, as one has to be born with those powers. The man advises to Ash to go to Lavender Town to catch a Ghost Pokémon from the Haunted Tower.

Tower of Terror

As Ash and his friends arrive at the Haunted Tower, Ash is hesitant to enter. Inside the Tower, Team Rocket are preparing to entrap Ash and his friends in order to steal Pikachu. However, James falls down a hole in the floor. As Meowth and Jessie inspect the hole, a Gastly frightens them, and they fall through the floor as well. Ash and his friends hear their scream from outside, and they become somewhat scared. As they enter the tower, they enter a room which is mysteriously lit up. A long table adorned in food lay in the middle of room, along with a piece of string with a message saying "Pull This". Ash mistakenly pulls it, and a wind sweeps up and lifts them into the air, causing them to flee out of the tower.

They become increasingly hesitant to re-enter the tower, but Ash knows it is the only way to capture a Ghost Pokémon. Ash and Pikachu enter alone, and they encounter a Haunter. Ash attempts to battle the Haunter in order to capture it, but Haunter creeps up on Ash from behind, scaring him. Gastly and Gengar then appear, floating through the floor. Gengar jokes around with Ash, but Ash does not find it funny, upsetting the three Ghost Pokémon, who sink back through the floor. Ash tries to pursue, but it knocked out by a chandelier. Ash wakes up, but finds himself able to float around, accompanied by the Ghost Pokémon. Haunter pulls a reluctant Ash through the air, soaring over Lavender Town. They approach Misty and Brock, and Ash lifts Misty into the air, much to her horror. Ash and the Ghost Pokémon then re-enter the tower and enter a room filled with toys. Ash understands that the Pokémon only want to play with someone, but Ash insists that he return to his body to continue his journey. Ash awakens as Misty and Brock lean over his body, and he resigns himself to the fact that the Ghost Pokémon are unobtainable. However, Haunter wishes to journey with Ash, and they head to Saffron City.

Haunter versus Kadabra

Back at Saffron City, Brock and Misty are reluctant to enter the Gym, but Ash, confident with Haunter, persuades them to accompany him. He challenges Sabrina, and she sends out her Kadabra. Ash sends out Haunter, but Haunter is nowhere to be see. Without a Pokémon to battle with, Ash flees the Gym, however Misty and Brock are not fortunate enough to escape. The man with telekinesis approaches Ash, noticing that his friends are in trouble. They endeavour to find Haunter, and the man explains Sabrina's childhood. As they search for Haunter, Team Rocket plot to steal Pikachu high above on a window cleaning platform. As they brandish a fishing net, Haunter appears, startling them. Their platform collapses, and Haunter catches them in their own fishing net. Haunter brings the net to Ash, and they head to the Gym.

The man opens the gym doors with his powers, and Misty and Brock appear to be turned into statues. Ash once again calls Haunter, but to no avail, and Pikachu volunteers to battle. Kadabra teleports to evade Pikachu's attack, and uses Psybeam to send Pikachu flying. Pikachu releases a Thunderbolt at Kadabra, but it uses Recover to heal from the attack. Unable to win against Kadabra, Ash consigns himself to defeat, when Haunter shows up. Sabrina is indignant that Ash is using two Pokémon at a time, but the man insists that Haunter isn't actually battling. Haunter approaches Sabrina, and licks her on the face. Sabrina surprisingly started to laugh with Haunter, and Kadabra follows suit, linked telepathically with Sabrina. With Kadabra unable to battle, Ash is declared the winner. Misty and Brock return to their normal state, and the man is revealed to be Sabrina's father.
