Nidoran♂ (Japanese: ニドラン♂ Nidoran♂) is a Poison-type Pokémon.

He evolves into Nidorino starting at level 16, who evolves into Nidoking when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Biology

Physiology

Nidoran♂ is a small, quadruped, porcupine-based Pokémon with large ears, front teeth and red eyes. They are covered with spines primarily on their back which can release potent poisons if Nidoran♂ is threatened.

Gender differences

Nidoran♂ is the male of the species, and is noted to be one of the first Pokémon to denote gender differences. In the later generations, however, Pokémon with genders are marked with a ♀ or ♂ symbol, rather than being actual different Pokémon.

Nidoran♂ have a larger forehead horn than their female counterparts, Nidoran♀. They also have more spines, and are of a different color.

Special abilities

Nidoran♂'s large horns can secrete a powerful venom; unlike his female counterpart, the size of Nidoran's horns are indicative of the strength of the venom. He also has unique muscles around his ears, which permit them to be moved in any direction.

Behavior

Nidoran♂ are fairly docile Pokémon, although they tend to be more alert and nervous than their female counterparts, constantly listening for the sounds of approaching enemies with their large ears. Their potent venom is used primarily as a defense, and most likely evolved to counteract their small body size.

Habitat

Nidoran♂ live in expansive hot savannas and plains. They share their native range with Nidoran♀ and both species are commonly found in Kanto, Johto, Unova and rarely in Sinnoh.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Nidoran♂ eat fruit and plants. This Pokémon's digestive system is unaffected by the poisonous plants.

Trivia

  • Nidoran was the first Pokémon to feature gender differences, and even gender; however, their difference is much greater than later Pokémon.
  • Despite the addition of genders in all Pokémon starting in Generation II, the two variations of Nidoran remained separate species, rather than a singular species that splits down different evolution paths based on gender.
    • A Nidoran♀ Egg does, however, have a chance of hatching into a Nidoran♂.
  • Nidoran♂'s alternate coloration is similar to Nidoran♀'s normal coloration.
  • Nidoran♂ and Nidorino share the same species name with their female counterparts Nidoran♀ and Nidorina. They are all known as Poison Pin Pokémon.
  • Due to the fact that his gender, ♂, is included in his name, checking Nidoran♂'s summary from Generation II onward will display as if he were genderless if he does not have a nickname. If his nickname is anything other than "Nidoran♂", his gender will appear as normal.
  • All of Nidoran♂'s Pokédex entries mentions his large ears except the one featured in Gold, HeartGold and Pokémon Stadium 2.
  • Nidoran♂ is one of eight Pokémon whose name has a non-alphabetic character in it, the others being Nidoran♀, Farfetch'd, Mr. Mime, Porygon2, Ho-Oh, Mime Jr. and Porygon-Z.
  • Nidoran♂ is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 273.

Origin

Nidoran♂ appears to be based on a porcupine or a rabbit, mouse, or even a hamster, as seen by their aggressive nature towards one another.

Name origin

Nidoran♂ may be derived from needle. It may also come from cnidocyte, a type of venomous cell responsible for the stings delivered by stinging animals, most notably jellyfish. Alternatively, it may be based on 二 ni (two) or 二度 nido (two times/two degrees) referring to the two distinct evolutionary lines with similar names and traits. Also, the Japanese word ran is translated as orchid in English. Orchids are flowers that can be purple or blue, these being the same colors as the male and female evolutionary forms of Nidoran, respectively. The is an indication of its male gender.
