This article is about the characters that teach moves Pokémon can learn at previous levels. For the characters that teach specific moves, see Move Tutor.

A Move Reminder (Japanese: 技思い出し Move Reminder, also わざおしえマニア Move-Teaching Maniac), sometimes called a move relearner by fans, is a character who allows Pokémon to relearn any move that they were able to learn from a previous level-up (usually in exchange for a Heart Scale). Reasons for this include none of that species being able to be obtained at an early enough level to actually learn the move (e.g. Zapdos and AncientPower in Generation IV), or the species having more than four starting moves (e.g. Kecleon).

Teachable moves

Move Reminders are restricted to teaching a Pokémon only moves that its species can learn; they cannot teach moves exclusive to an earlier evolution. In particular, many Pokémon that evolve by evolutionary stone have a very restricted set of learnable moves in their evolved forms compared to their unevolved forms. For example, Eevee can learn Take Down by leveling up, but none of its evolutions can; this means that an Eevee of level 25 or higher could be taught Take Down by a Move Reminder, but a Vaporeon or other Eeveelution of the same level could not.

Certain Pokémon may also be taught moves via the Move Reminder that they would not normally learn until a later level or at all by leveling up. For example, while Lopunny could normally only learn Healing Wish at level 63 by leveling up, a Move Reminder can teach the move to Lopunny before then since it also counts as one of Lopunny's starting moves. The move Rototiller can also be taught to Lopunny by a Move Reminder, and this is the only way for Lopunny to learn this move (outside of breeding).

In Generation VI, any Pokémon bred or obtained in a Generation VI game may also be taught any move it knew when it hatched or was obtained. This includes Egg moves, Volt Tackle bred onto Pichu, and event-exclusive moves such as the Pokémon Center Tokyo Bay Inkay's Happy Hour.

Like all methods of teaching moves (other than Pokémon Day Care), the Move Reminder cannot overwrite HM moves.

In Pokémon XD, if a Pokémon has four moves, the Move Reminder will not be able to teach it a move until the Move Deleter deletes one of the Pokémon's current moves.

Locations

While Generation II has no formal Move Reminder, in Pokémon Stadium 2, after defeating the Elite Four and Champion at the Gym Leader Castle, the player will be allowed to reteach a move to one of the Pokémon that was involved in the battle.

Quotes

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald

  • When the player speaks to him:
"I'm the Move Tutor. I know all the moves that Pokémon learn - every one of them - and I can teach Pokémon those moves. I can teach a move to a Pokémon of yours if you'd like. I'll do it for a Heart Scale. I'm collecting those now."
  • If the player has a Heart Scale:
"Oh! That's it! That's an honest to goodness Heart Scale! Let me guess, you want me to teach a move?"
Yes: "Which Pokémon needs tutoring?"
  • If the selected Pokémon cannot be taught a move:
"Sorry… It doesn't appear as if I have any move I can teach that Pokémon." (Returns to previous question.)
  • If the selected Pokémon can be taught a move:
"Which move should I teach?"
  • The last thing he always says:
"If your Pokémon need to learn a move, come back with a Heart Scale."

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

  • When the player first* speaks to him:

  • If the player has enough of either item:
"Sniff, sniff… Hm! You smell of Mushrooms! Do you want me to teach a move to a Pokémon of yours?"
Yes: "Which Pokémon needs tutoring?"
  • If the selected Pokémon cannot be taught a move:
"Sorry… It doesn't appear as if I have a move I can teach that Pokémon." (Returns to previous question.)
  • If the selected Pokémon can be taught a move:
"Which move should I teach?"
  • If player has enough of both items after teaching a move
"Then, I'll need a Mushroom or two. What are you going to give me?"
  • The last thing he always says:
"If your Pokémon need to learn a move, I need a Mushroom or two."

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness

"Be it a move that was never learned, or a move once learned and forgotten, if moves are what Pokémon need, I'm the man! All it takes are some Poké Coupons for me, the Move Teacher, to teach your Pokémon those moves you want and a whole lot more! So, are there any Pokémon that want to learn a new move or two?"
No: "There'll be times like this. Drop in when you need me."
Yes:
  • Try to teach a move the Pokémon already knows:
"Hold on. It already knows the move <move>."
  • If the player doesn't have enough Poké Coupons:
"You don't have enough Poké Coupons. I'm sorry, but I can't teach moves to your Pokémon.
  • If the player has enough Poké Coupons:
"So, I should teach the move <move>?"
No: (return to list)
Yes: "Now it's my turn. ...Done! Your <nickname> has learned <move>. Are there any other Pokémon that need the help of me, the Move Teacher?"
