Morty's Gengar (Japanese: マツバのゲンガー Matsuba's Gangar) is Morty's main Pokémon in the games, anime, and manga.

History

Morty and his Gengar

Gengar first appeared in A Ghost of a Chance where Ash and his friends were in the Burned Tower as they thought it was the Ecruteak City Gym. When Pikachu and Togepi disappeared in a small hole of the Burned Tower, Morty had Gengar round up the Gastly and Haunter in order to find the two.

When Team Rocket ran off with Pikachu and Togepi, Gengar appeared and tripped them with Lick. Gengar then gave chase to Team Rocket. After it knocked Pikachu and Togepi off of Team Rocket’s grasp, the trio sent out their Arbok and Weezing to battle Gengar. Gengar defeated them with Shadow Ball.

In From Ghost to Ghost, Gengar demonstrated to a group of Trainers in the Ecruteak Gym its Confuse Ray attack to show them how to properly fight.

During the Gym battle with Ash, Morty sent Gengar out as his last Pokémon. It fought against Ash's Noctowl. When Noctowl began with Confusion, Gengar countered it with Shadow Ball, which caused an explosion. Gengar used the opportunity to turn invisible. Noctowl was unable to find Gengar as it attacked while invisible. However, Ash told Noctowl to use Confusion on the whole building which revealed Gengar's hiding place. With Gengar visible again, Noctowl used Foresight to identify Gengar and finished it off with Tackle, defeating Morty. This won the match and the Fog Badge for Ash.

Gengar reappeared in a flashback in All That Glitters! where Ash was recalling the time he received the first four badges of Johto.

In For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!, Gengar went through the floor of the Tin Tower while Morty called out to it to find the Crystal Bells. Gengar than appeared behind Eusine and played a prank on him which lasted briefly. When Ecruteak City was under attack by angry Bug-type Pokémon and Gligar, Morty had Gengar use Confuse Ray on the Parasect.

Gengar reappeared in another flashback in Bagged Then Tagged! alongside Whitney's Miltank.

Personality and characteristics

Gengar is mostly out of its Poké Ball and hiding in the shadows, always coming out whenever Morty needs it. Gengar was mischievous and loved to play pranks on people, especially those who enter the Burned Tower. It had an ability to turn invisible and reappear elsewhere while the opponent wasn't looking. However, Ash overcame this by having his Noctowl use Confusion on the whole building.

Despite its mischievous nature, Gengar has been shown to be helpful especially with cases with Pokémon or items stolen by Team Rocket.

Gengar appeared in A Promise Given to Miltank where Morty called it out to stop a Spearow from stealing the satchel that contained Berries collected by Gold.

Morty's Gengar in Pocket Monsters HGSS Jou's Big Adventure

Gengar appeared in The Revived Team Rocket!!. Morty sent it out alongside his Haunter to battle Jou's Totodile in the Burned Tower.

After Haunter was defeated, Gengar went up next. Despite putting up a great fight, Gengar was defeated.
