Mist (Japanese: しろいきり White Mist) is a non-damaging Ice-type move introduced in Generation I.

It appears to be a stat protecting counterpart to Haze, as the type, PP, and Japanese names are the same or very similar. They are also usually learned at the same level.

Effect

Generation I

Mist protects the user from stat modifications inflicted by the opponent until it switches out. Moves used by the opponent that only cause a stat change, such as Growl or Kinesis, will fail; moves that deal damage and lower an opponent's stat, such as Rock Smash and Psychic, still do damage but do not decrease stats.

Mist does not remove any stat modifiers already in effect, does not prevent the stat modifications associated with burn and paralysis, and does not prevent the user or allied Pokémon from lowering their own stats. The effect of Mist can be removed by Haze.

Mist will fail if it is already under effect. Mist does not stack with the effect of Guard Spec.

Generation II

Haze can no longer remove the effect of Mist. The effect can be passed with Baton Pass.

Generation III

Mist now affects the user's team rather than specifically the user, and fades away after five turns; it is unaffected by switching. The team is also protected from Abilities that lower stats such as Intimidate.

Generation IV

The effect of Mist can be removed by Defog.

Trivia

  • Guard Spec. has the same effect as Mist, and it will even say "the ally was shrouded in mist."
  • In Pokémon Yellow, Vaporeon is programmed to learn both Haze and Mist at level 42; however, a bug prevents a Pokémon from learning two moves at the same level, so Vaporeon cannot learn Mist in Yellow.
