Mewtwo (Japanese: ミュウツー Mewtwo) is a Psychic-type legendary Pokémon.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, it can Mega Evolve into two different forms: Mega Mewtwo X using Mewtwonite X and Mega Mewtwo Y using Mewtwonite Y. Mega Mewtwo X is Psychic/Fighting, has the Ability Steadfast, and its Attack stat is increased. Mega Mewtwo Y has the Ability Insomnia and its Special Attack stat is increased.

It is among the most well-known Pokémon, being the star of the first movie and, in Generation I, the most powerful Pokémon in regards to its total base stats. It is a member of the Mew duo along with Mew.

Biology

Mewtwo is one of the first Pokémon created by science. It is a bipedal, humanoid creature with some feline feature. It is primarily gray with a long purple tail. On top of its head are two short, blunt horns, and it has purple eyes. There is a tube that extends from the back of its skull to the top of its spine, bypassing its neck. It has a defined chest and shoulders, which resemble a breastplate. The three digits on each hand and foot have spherical tips. Its tail is thick at the base, but thins before ending in a small bulb.

Using Mewtwonite X, Mewtwo can Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X. This form is larger and bulkier than its normal state. The horns on its head are longer, thinner, and have pointed tips. Its eyes are now light blue, and it has large, purple growths over its shoulders. Its forearms and thighs have several raised ridges, and its digits are now longer and thinner. The tail is slightly shorter than before and has a curled tip.

When holding the Mega Stone, Mewtwonite Y, Mewtwo is capable of Mega Evolving into Mega Mewtwo Y. In this state, it is smaller, lighter, and loses its long tail. However, it grows a long, purple appendage with a curled tip from the back of its head that is similar to its previous form's tail. It has two pointed spikes on its head and a half-ring structure over its head. Its eyes are now red and slightly larger. A bumpy ridge similar to a sternum replaces the breastplate structure on its chest. The digits on its hands and feet are now purple and more bulbous, and the middle toe is longer than the others are.

Mewtwo was created by scientists, who gave it powerful fighting abilities. Because of the way in which it was created, it is said to have a savage hear lacking in compassion. However, as shown in the anime, Mewtwo can be caring, protective, and even altruistic. As seen in the first movie Mewtwo is capable of levitation, speaking telepathically, and controlling the minds of other living beings. Conserving energy by remaining motionless, Mewtwo is able to unleash its full power in battle. It is also capable of materializing psychic waves in the form of its signature move, Psystrike. Though rarely seen in the wild, it is said to resting in dark cave somewhere.

History

According to the scientific logs found in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island, Mewtwo was born of a pregnant Mew, found deep in the jungles of Guyana, whose embryo had been tampered with to alter its DNA. It was held and studied in the mansion where the scientists, including Blaine and Mr. Fuji, performed horrific gene-splicing experiments that made it vicious and extremely powerful. It eventually broke free of the Mansion, destroying it in the process, and fled. It can be encountered in Cerulean Cave, accessible only after a Trainer has proven his or her skill at the Indigo Plateau.

Major appearances

Mewtwo (anime)

While Mewtwo has been the Pokémon of focus of a movie and a special, it also made brief appearances in The Battle of the Badge and Showdown at the Po-ké Corral in its body armor. The first instance was when Giovanni used it to battle Gary's Arcanine and Nidoking. The second time was when Mewtwo totaled Giovanni's headquarters and flew off. While a scene involving Mewtwo and Giovanni did appear in It's Mr. Mime Time, it wasn't in the movie. Mewtwo made further appearances during the openings of Jirachi Wish Maker standing on a rooftop wearing a cape, in the intro of Destiny Deoxys and The Rise of Darkrai, chasing a Mew.

Mewtwo (M16)

Another Mewtwo debuted, along with its Mega Evolved state, in the special episode SS026, a prologue to M16. In the special, Mewtwo escaped from its creators and fought against a Pokémon hunter named Danku, while Virgil attempted to help protect it.

It appeared in M16 in both of its regular and Mega Evolved states. At the beginning of the film, Mewtwo encountered the Genesect Army, who were looking for their home. After a short conflict, the Army departed, and Mewtwo followed them to New Tork City. It met Ash and his friends, then got into a great conflict with the Red Genesect leading the Army.

Trivia

  • Mewtwo was the first Pokémon seen in the English dub, as it appears at the very beginning of the first dub opening.
  • Mewtwo and Lugia have the highest base stat totals of all Psychic types.
  • Mewtwo is the only Pokémon with a 680 base stat total that is not a version mascot and is also the only one that is not part of any legendary trios.
  • A journal quote from the Pokémon Mansion states that Mewtwo's birthday is February 6.
  • Mewtwo can learn damaging moves of all types except Dragon.
  • An image of Mewtwo is seen on the door to Bill's lighthouse in Mystery at the Lighthouse even though Mewtwo had only been seen by its creators and Team Rocket at that point in the anime.
  • Although Mewtwo is a clone of Mew, it comes before Mew in the Pokédex.
  • The island country of Niue released a one-dollar coin featuring Mewtwo as part of a commemorative promotion for the Pokémon franchise, with Mewtwo on the reverse side and the nation's crest on the obverse.

Origin

Like Mew, Mewtwo has some feline characteristics. Its body structure is much larger as a result of gene splicing. Mewtwo also has some characteristics of a grey alien.

Name origin

Mewtwo is a combination of Mew (the Pokémon it originated from) and two (indicating that it is a clone). It also sounds somewhat similar to mutant (myūtanto).
