The original Japanese version of this card was part of the Fossil set. The English version was released as a promotional card at Pokémon Trading Card Game leagues in both holographic (April 2000) and non-holographic (January 2000) versions. It was never included in the English Fossil set.
This card was released in the Japanese {{TCG|Mystery of the Fossils}} expansion, as a Holofoil card. The English print became available at {{TCG|Pokémon League}}s as a Non Holofoil {{TCG|Wizards Black Star Promos|Wizards Black Star Promo}} on January 8, 2000. This card was released again on Glossy card stock as a Japanese "english language" black star promo in the Japanese magazine "Gotta" in 2000... besides the Glossy Mew they also had a Glossy French Pikachu insert in 2000. The "Gotta" magazine mostly has magic cards as inserts, but these glossy pokemon cards are very rare and at times even mistaken for being fake by accident.  A Holofoil reprint, numbered 9, became available in Pokémon Leagues in April 2000.
