May (Japanese: ハルカ Haruka) is the female choice for the player character in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, and also serves as the rival in the same games if the player chooses to play as the male character. Her male counterpart is Brendan.

The Generation III games deviated from the tradition of naming characters as their respective game names, such as Red in the Generation I and Generation II games. As such, May's counterparts include May from the anime and Sapphire in the Pokémon Adventures manga.

In the games

Role

If May is selected as the player character she starts her journey moving from her home in Johto to her new home in the town of Littleroot in Hoenn. After saving Prof. Birch from a wild Pokémon, she is given one of the three starters of the Hoenn region. May develops a close bond with Brendan, and eventually Wally, who both act as her rivals. May goes on to gather the eight Badges of Hoenn, stop the plans of Team AquaSE/Team MagmaRE and conquer the Pokémon League all before going off to face the Battle Frontier.

If May is not selected as the player, she is helping her dad finish the Hoenn Pokédex and becoming a Pokémon Professor. She is also the player's rival and friend. Unlike other rivals (except for Brendan when playing as May), she gives up being a Trainer, making them the only rivals unavailable for battle after defeating the Elite Four. Additionally, they both are the only ones to not evolve their starter Pokémon into its final form.

Littleroot Town
"Pokémon fully restored! Items ready, and... Huh? Huh? Who... who are you?... Oh, you're <player>. So your move was today. Um... I'm May. Glad to meet you! I... I have this dream of becoming friends with Pokémon all over the world. I... I heard about you, <player>, from my dad, Prof. Birch. I was hoping you would be nice, <player>, and that we could be friends. Oh, this is silly, isn't it? I...I've just met you, <player>. Eheheh... Oh, no! I forgot! I was supposed to help Dad catch some wild Pokémon! <player>, I'll catch you later! "
Oldale Town
"<player>! Over here! Let's hurry home!"
Route 103
"Let’s see... The Pokémon found on Route 103 include... Oh, hi, <player>! ...Oh, I see, my dad gave you a Pokémon as a gift. Since we’re here, let’s have a quick battle! I’ll give you a taste of what being a trainer is like."
  • When defeated
"Wow! That’s great! <player>, you’re pretty good!"
  • After being defeated
"I think I know why my dad has an eye out for you now. I mean, you just got that Pokemon but it already likes you. You might be able to befriend any kind of Pokémon easily. Well, it’s time to head back to the Lab."
Professor Birch’s Lab
"Oh, wow, <player>! You got a Pokédex, too! That’s great! Just like me! I’ve got something for you, too!"
"It’s fun if you can get a lot of Pokémon! I’m going to look all over the place because I want different Pokémon. If I find any cute Pokémon, I’ll catch them with Poké Balls!"
  • If talked to once again
"I wonder where I should go look for Pokémon next?"
Rustboro City
"Oh, hi, <player>! How's your Pokédex coming along? Mine's looking pretty decent. I caught Pokémon in Petalburg Woods until I ran out of Poké Balls."
"Oh, by the way, I passed Mr. Briney in Petalburg Woods. I guess he's on his way home to his cottage by the sea. <player>, you just moved here so you might not know this, but Mr. Briney was once a revered seafarer."
Route 110
"Hi, <player>, long time no see! While I was searching for other Pokémon, my Pokénon grew stronger. So... How about a little battle?"
  • When defeated
"Yikes! You're better than I expected!"
  • After being defeated
"<player>, you've been busy training, too, haven't you? I think you deserve a reward! This is from me!"
"That's an Itemfinder. Try it out. If there's an item that's not visible, it emits a sound. Okay, <player>, let's meet again! I know it's a little silly coming from me, but I think you should train a lot harder for the next time."
Lavaridge Town
"<player>! Long time no see! Oh? While I was visiting the hot springs, you got the Lavaridge Gym Badge. You must have caught some good Pokémon... No, I guess you raised some. I guess it would be okay for you to have this."
"With those Go-Goggles, you'll have no trouble getting through the desert near Route 111. But, wow, <player>... Challenging Gyms... You're trying hard because you don't want to lose to me, I bet! <player>, I think I should challenge your dad in Petalburg Gym. <player>, see you again!"
Route 119
"<player>! Where were you? I was looking for you! How much stronger have you gotten? Let me check for you! Ready with your Pokémon? Of course you are! Go!"
  • When defeated
"Achah! <player>, you're strong! I was worried that you might be struggling with your training."
  • After being defeated
"But I had absolutely nothing to be worried about! Keep it up! And, here! I have a present for you."
"Use Fly and your Pokémon will instantly carry you to any town you've already visited. But to use Fly you have to get the Gym Badge from Fortree City. That's important, so don't forget. You should Fly home and visit Littleroot for a change. I bet your mom's worried about you, <player>. Well, let's meet again somewhere!"
Lilycove City
"Oh, hey, <player>, are you shopping, too? I bought a whole bunch of Dolls and Posters. Of course, I've also caught a lot of Pokémon, and I'm raising them properly, too. Actually, I'm more worried if you're raising Pokémon properly, <player>. I'll battle with you, so you can show me your Pokémon, <player>."
Yes: "The Pokémon I raised won't be beaten by your Pokémon, <player>!"
No: Oh, why? <player>, haven't you been raising your Pokémon? That's not a very good showing as a Trainer."
  • When defeated
"... ... ... ... ...I remember the battle I had with you, <player>, on Route 103. That battle helped you become this strong, <player>, didn't it?"
  • After being defeated
"I'm thinking of going back to Littleroot soon. I've caught a decent group of Pokémon, and my Pokédex is coming along, so I'm going home to show my dad. <player>, what are you going to do> Collect all the Gym Badges and take the Pokémon League challenge? Well, while you're collecting badges, <player>, I'm going to work on my Pokédex. I'll complete it before you! See you!"

Optional names

In the game, two of the optional names—one in Ruby and one in Sapphire—refer to "land" and "sea" respectively. In the English version, these are Terra and Marina; in the Japanese version, ムツミ Mutsumi and ナミ Nami (陸 mutsu means land and 波 nami means a wave of water). This is also the case in other languages. Unlike Brendan's name list, none of the three shared names correspond to this theme.

May in the anime

In the anime

Main article: May (anime)

In the anime, a character based on May was a Pokémon Coordinator and Ash's traveling companion throughout the Advanced Generation series.

In the manga

Her counterpart in the Pokémon Adventures manga is Sapphire who, unlike her other counterparts, takes up Gym challenges and is an all-around tomboy thanks to a traumatic incident with Ruby where a Salamence attacked them when they were children. She does have a feminine side however, as is shown in later volumes.

A counterpart to May, Sapphire, appears in the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga. Just like May's anime counterpart, she is a Coordinator who chooses Torchic as her starter Pokémon.

Although they do not look alike, she has the same Japanese default name as Haruka from the Pokémon Chamo-Chamo ☆ Pretty ♪ manga series. Likewise, Haruka is a Coordinator who also chooses Torchic as her starter Pokémon, just like May's anime counterpart.

Trivia

  • As the player character (along with Brendan), they are the only set of player characters that have both a mother and a father present in the games.
  • May and Brendan are the only rivals whose starter Pokémon does not reach its final form.
    • They are also the only rivals who can't be fought in rematches after the player defeats the Elite Four.
  • May's English name is pronounced similarly to the Japanese name of another playable female protagonist.
  • In no game she appears in is "May" one of the default names for the female player character.
