It evolves into Mantine via level-up with a Remoraid in the party.

Like its evolved form, Mantyke looks like a manta ray. It has wide fins, and a completely flat body. On its back is a pattern with two red spots with white outlines and a white curve underneath; all this resembles a happy face.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Like Mantine, Mantyke has the ability to swim at high speeds.

Behavior

Much like Mantine, it appears to be quite friendly.

Habitat

Mantyke are found wild in the ocean.

In the anime

Ash and Pikachu riding on a Mantyke

In Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, Jack Walker uses the Capture Styler on Mantyke in order to use it to help him reach the temple. It is also shown swimming with a Mantine, presumably a parent.

It made its debut appearance in the anime in Following A Maiden's Voyage! during the beginning narration of the episode.

Mantyke made its next appearance in the anime in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team!, used by Ash in the second leg of the Pokémon Triathlon.

Several Mantyke appeared in Cheers on Castaways Isle!.

Trivia

  • Mantyke is the only Pokémon so far that needs another Pokémon to be in the party in order to evolve it.
  • It is the second heaviest baby Pokémon behind Munchlax.
  • Mantyke is one of ten non-Bug, Template:Type2 Pokémon that cannot learn Fly.
  • Mantyke, along with Spinarak, Dusknoir and Arbok have patterns that resemble a face on their bodies.
  • At a catch rate of 25, Mantyke is second only to the Beldum evolutionary family as the most difficult non-legendary to catch. This makes it more difficult to capture than Dialga or Palkia (25 in comparison to 30).
    • This also makes it the hardest baby Pokémon to catch.
  • Despite what is said in the Pokédex, Mantyke's face on its back didn't differ in the back sprite of HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Origin

Mantyke is based on a baby manta ray.

Name origin

Mantyke is a combination of manta and tyke, a word sometimes used to described a child. Its Japanese name, Tamanta, is a combination of 玉 tama, ball, and manta.
