Manaphy (Japanese: マナフィ Manaphy) is a legendary Template:Type2 Pokémon, first appearing in Generation IV. Manaphy is not directly obtainable in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Manaphy's ability is Hydration, which heals a status effect when Manaphy is in play during rain.

It is comparable to Celebi and Jirachi, but more so to Mew, both for its place in the regional Pokédex list, identical base stats and its inability to be caught during normal gameplay. Unlike them, however, Manaphy is not a Template:Type2; it also has the unprecedented ability to breed, though the offspring is a Phione. Interestingly, Manaphy is joined by Shaymin this generation, which is not a Psychic-type Pokémon either. Manaphy is the last Pokémon in the Sinnoh Pokédex, but not the Generation IV National Dex.

Biology

Physiology

Manaphy is a small, blue, aquatic Pokémon. It has stubby feet and club-like arms that are longer than its body. Manaphy has a red gem on its chest. Manaphy has a round head with a pair of long blue antennae. Eighty percent of Manaphy's body is made of water and is highly susceptible to its environment. One of these reactions is that when Manaphy reproduces in an ocean that's warmer than those that they are native to, the child will be a Phione as opposed to another Manaphy.

Manaphy is genderless.

Special abilities

Due to Manaphy's high water content in its body, it can heal itself whenever its raining. Manaphy can control water and focus them into attacks such as Water Pulse and BubbleBeam. Manaphy can also switch the perspective of people, and Pokémon, with each other, by using its signature move, Heart Swap.

Manaphy appears to be native to the cold oceans of the Fiore region, but cannot hatch there, instead only being able to be hatched in the Sinnoh region. Strangely, all eggs Manaphy produces in Sinnoh hatch into Phione.

Diet

In the anime

Manaphy is the star of the ninth movie, Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. It is initially an egg that an evil gang wants to steal. Manaphy hatches in May's hands and helps the People of the Water to find the Sea Temple. It is known as the Prince of the Sea.

Manaphy also makes a cameo in Together and in We Will Be Heroes.

In the manga

In the manga "Pokémon Ranger, the Comic" (from the creators of Pokémon Adventures), Cameron from Summerland found Manaphy's Egg on Fiore's Sea, then it was stolen by the Go-Rock Squad who wanted to use its enormous powers for bad purposes when it hatched. This plan failed when Solana and Lunick saved the egg and it was given to Prof. Hastings's granddaughter who lives in Sinnoh.

Trivia Manaphy's English name was revealed on November 2, 2006, the same day that the region Diamond and Pearl take place in was confirmed to be named Sinnoh. Jirachi, Manaphy, and Phione are the only legendary Pokémon to have not been given an in-game location in the main series as of yet. Manaphy is also the only event Pokémon to date that debuted in a spin-off game rather than in the main series. Manaphy is actually lighter and shorter than Phione. Manaphy and Ditto are the only Pokémon that are both able to breed and unobtainable through breeding. Origin Manaphy may be based upon sea angels, tiny transparent ocean mollusks that look like ocean fairies and possess pairs of flexible tentacles they use to feed. Name origin Manaphy's name may be based on manatee, the name of a water-dwelling mammal. It could also be a combination of mana and clione. There was an event giving away Manaphy through Mystery Gift that was held at Toys "R" Us on September 29, 2007. This special edition Manaphy was contained in a Cherish Ball, with the OT of TRU and an ID No. of 09297. It was also holding a Red Scarf, most likely a reference to May's scarf in the ninth movie. There was an Australian event giving away level 50 Manaphy through Mystery Gift that was held at JB Hi-Fi. This special edition Manaphy was contained in a Cherish Ball, with the OT of JBHF and an ID No. of 11077. It was also holding a Red Scarf.
