Mallow (Japanese: マオ Mao) is one of the Captains of Akala Island whose trial takes place at Lush Jungle. She specializes in Grass Pokémon.
In the core series games
Character profile
Mallow is one of three Captains that are found on Akala Island, the others being her friends Lana and Kiawe. She is an energetic girl who loves cooking, but her sense of taste can be peculiar. Her energetic behavior is often demonstrated either in battle and offering the player some encouragement before their trial. In relation to her cooking, she appears to have a taste for certain ingredients such as Moomoo Milk. Her own dishes can are often considered to be delicious, with the Mallow Special being her signature dish. This dish, while enjoyed by many, can be seen as rather unfavorable to others. It is enjoyed by both people and Pokémon. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, she can be seen enjoying Aromatherapy. Mallow has a habit of using cooking-related terms in her dialogue. Mallow is great friends with Lana, as seen in Lana's concept art, they are seen doing delieveries together. She admires to be a great chef like Siebold.
Mallow resides in Konikoni City on Akala Island, along with her father Abe and older brother Ulu. She works at her family's restaurant in the city, helping to gather ingredients for the restaurant by finding them at the Lush Jungle trial site. She also helps the business with deliveries. Mallow has plans to take over her family's business. According to her appearance in Pokémon Masters EX, based on her core series appearance, she was born on Akala as well.
While Mallow appears in all Alola-based games in Generation VII, her battles are notably version exclusive. Kiawe or Lana will fill her battling roles if she is unavailable.
Appearance
Mallow is a young girl standing at a height of 5'3" (1.60 m). Her hair is a deep green color. A set of bangs, that split into two at their tips, curls down and back up above her forehead. She has two long pigtails hanging from the bottom of her head, reaching down to the bottom of her back. These pigtails split into 3, with the middle of each being longer than the other two and two shorter ones resembling plant leaves "sprout" from the tie. She wears a thin dark-green headband that ties around her forehead. The headband has a green "x" shaped decoration resembling thorns that rests above her curled bangs. Also on the headband, is a giant, pink, flower-like ornament. Mallow has thin green eyebrows matching her hair color. Mallow's large, round eyes contain one eyelash on each, and her irises are the same green color as her hair.
Mallow's outfit is rather simple, being mostly a pair light blue-gray overalls resembling an apron. The overalls have a pair of shoulder straps that go over her shoulders and cross at the back, ending at her lower back. Aside from the shoulder straps, the back of the outfit is mostly open, revealing a pink tube-top. The bottom half of her overalls resembles a pair of shorts that have a strap tying around her wait giving her bow that originates at the connecting seams of her shoulder straps. The pant legs have white frills, looking as if they were purposely cut. At the top of her chest, her overalls contains a single pocket with a white flap, where she hold small items such as berries. She wears a pin on her right hip, resembling the sigil that all Captains wear somewhere around their body to indicate their position. This sigil resembles a four-leaf clover with the top leaf colored green. A similar marking is found underneath and imprinted on her right pant leg and colored all white.
Mallow owns a pair of green slip-on shoes with dark green ties. The soles and toes are both white.
Mallow's concept artwork also displays her wearing the Forage Bag that she offers to the player, however she is never seen wearing the item in-game. Instead her anime counterpart wears it as a school bag. This bag is primarily a yellow sack with a dark brownish-yellow bottom. Two brown straps go around the shoulders and end on the bottom half. The yellow part of the rucksack is crosshatched with darker yellow spots. The top is sealed clothes with brown string with several decorations resembling fruit and berries.

Background
Website blurb: "Captain Mallow is an expert with Grass-type Pokémon. She loves cooking, but it seems that sometimes her taste is a bit particular..."
As a Captain, she provides guidance and watches over trial-goers as they do their trial. She is in charge of caring for the Totem Lurantis that appears in Lush Jungle. Mallow appears throughout the player's journey across Akala Island. Her trial requires the player to recognize and collect certain ingredients found within Lush Jungle which can be used to make the Mallow Special. The player can sleep in her bed found at her restaurant in Konikoni City, which provides the caption of: "There's a faint smell of spices, sauces, and other fragrant things..."
Story
The player first meets Mallow alongside Kahuna Olivia upon arriving in Heahea City. Mallow was out doing deliveries, and explains to the player and Hau that she looks forward to them doing her trial. She is later found at Paniola Ranch, where she registers the Stoutland Search into the player's Ride Pager. She explains to the player of where to go and that first trial is at Brooklet Hill on Route 5. After completing both Lana and Kiawe's trials, Mallow appears for a third time for her own trial at Lush Jungle. Her trial is the last the player undergoes before challenging the kahuna. Mallow is thrilled for the player to take her trial, knowing how the player had received a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Koko. In her trial, Mallow provides the player with a Forage Bag and asks the player to gather a set of ingredients using the Stoutland she had offered earlier. These ingredients include a Tiny Mushroom, a Mago Berry, a Miracle Seed, and a Revival Herb. After the ingredients are gathered, Mallow calls over her friends, Lana and Kiawe, who will provide cooking supplies. The ingredients are then mixed together into a meal, by the player, creating an aroma that attracts the trial's Totem Pokémon, Lurantis. After defeat, Mallow demonstrates the Grassium Z pose for the Bloom Doom Z-Move. She also provides the player with a set of Nest Balls, so that they can obtain Pokémon found in Lush Jungle. Noticing that the food left over wasn't finished by Lurantis, Mallow offers the remaining food to her friends, who are off put by the spicy taste that the Mallow Special provides.
At the end of the game, Mallow appears with the rest of the Captains at the festival in Iki Town after the player has become Champion. She is seen hanging around Lana and Kiawe. In the credits of Sun and Moon, a photograph taken by the player character is shown. Mallow is shown at her restaurant, offering food to Olivia.
Post game and side-quest
In Pokémon Moon, after defeating Olivia, the player can visit the second floor of a restaurant in Konikoni City during the daytime, where Mallow is in her room. Mallow will go to the Lush Jungle for a battle, but after she leaves, her older brother asks the player to ask Mallow to look for his Wimpod. Upon arriving in the jungle, Mallow explains that Wimpod was gathering ingredients for the restaurant, before challenging the player. After the battle, Mallow discusses her future and her plans to take over her family business. Shortly after telling her story, she will award the player the Reverent battle style. She leaves after realizing she needs to bring back her brother's Pokémon. She can later be encountered again at the Battle Tree as a possible opponent or Multi Battle partner.

Story
Mallow is an energetic girl who loves cooking, and but her sense of taste can be peculiar.
The player first meets Mallow alongside Kahuna Olivia upon arriving in Heahea City, excited for them to take her trial. She is later found at Paniola Ranch, registering Stoutland Search into the player's Ride Pager and telling them where to continue. After completing both Lana and Kiawe's trials, Mallow appears for a third time for her own trial at Lush Jungle. Her trial is nearly identical to that in Sun and Moon, Mallow provides the player with a Forage Bag and asks the player to gather ingredients with Stoutland. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the ingredients needed are a Mago Berry, a jar of Honey, and a Big Root. After the ingredients are gathered, Mallow calls over her friends, Lana and Kiawe. Noticing that the food left over wasn't finished by Lurantis, Mallow offers the remaining food to her friends, who are off put by the spicy taste that the Mallow Special provides, keeping the rest of it to give to Olivia later.

The player first meets Mallow alongside Island Kahuna Olivia upon arriving in Heahea City. Her trial is the last the player undergoes before challenging the Kahuna. In the trial of Lush Jungle, Mallow give the player a VII and asks the player to gather four ingredients; a Valuable item, a Mago Berry, a Type-enhancing item, and a Herbal medicine. After the ingredients are gathered, Mallow will call over Lana and Kiawe, who will provide cooking supplies. Mallow asks the player to pound the ingredients together, which she then makes into a meal, which attracts the trial's Totem Pokémon, Lurantis.
Mallow can also be encountered at Lush Jungle during Mina's trial, along with Lana. After spotting her near the jungle entrance, the player can follow Mallow deeper into the forest. There, she's seen enjoying a relaxing Aromatherapy released by Comfey, until she and the Pokémon are startled by the player's presence. In order to make the player keep what they just saw a secret, Mallow/Lana challenges the player to a battle. After which, Mallow gives the player a Green Petal as a part of the trial. She and Lana will offer to escort the player to Wela Volcano Park to meet Kiawe and get the next petal from him.

In Moon version after defeating Olivia, during the day the player can visit the second floor of a restaurant in Konikoni City, where Mallow is in her room. Mallow will go to the Lush Jungle for a battle, but after she leaves, her older brother asks the player to ask Mallow to look for his Wimpod. Upon arriving in the jungle, Mallow explains that Wimpod was gathering ingredients for the restaurant her family owns before challenging the player. After the battle, Mallow discusses her future and her plans to take over her family business. She leaves after realizing she needs to bring back her brother's Pokémon.
At the end of the game, Mallow appears with the rest of the Captains at the festival in Iki Town after the player has become Champion. She is seen hanging around Lana and Kiawe.

Post game and side-quest
In Pokémon Ultra Moon, after becoming Champion, the player can visit the second floor of her restaurant in Konikoni City during the daytime, where Mallow is in her room. This begins a quest nearly identical to that in Moon, except her Pokémon will be at a higher level, fully evolved, and infused with a Grassium Z. She will awards the player the Reverent battle style like in Moon. She can later be encountered again at the Battle Tree as a possible opponent or Multi Battle partner.

Mallow debuted in Going Ashore and Neighboring Akala Island. She, Lana, and Kiawe traveled to Heahea City to meet Sun, a boy approved to take part in the island challenge. Curious about whether or not Sun was worthy enough to do the island challenge, Kiawe challenged him to a short battle. Though the match ended without a winner, Kiawe bonded with Sun and accepted him as a trialgoer. Lana was still reluctant and told the others to follow her to Brooklet Hill.

In True Identity and the Totem Pokémon of Brooklet Hill, Sun went to have his trial with Lana while Moon went with Mallow to Lush Jungle so she could harvest special Berries. After arriving, they found Tapu Lele under attack by a Xurkitree emerging from an Ultra Wormhole. Moon tried and failed to capture Xurkitree, allowing it to retreat back into the wormhole and escape. After Tapu Lele angrily flew off, Moon decided to get information about what happened by asking the guardian deity directly. With help from the local wild Pokémon, Moon successfully obtained a Mirage Berry. Mallow received a call from Kiawe, who was attacked by Gladion, who was looking for the Ruins of Life. Mallow, Moon, Sun, and Lana went to Memorial Hill, where they found an injured Kiawe. When a group of Team Skull Grunts appeared, Mallow and Lana stayed behind to battle them while the others went to protect Tapu Lele from Gladion. After the Grunts were defeated, Mallow and Lana reunited with the others after they successfully helped Tapu Lele.

In Flash and Cosmog's Secret, Mallow summoned a Totem Lurantis so Moon could fight it to train and get stronger. After Lurantis was defeated, everyone met at Mallow's family restaurant, where they talked to Professor Kukui's wife, Professor Burnet, over a video phone. After suspecting Team Skull may be related to the wormholes appearing around Alola, Lana suggested infiltrating Team Skull's base in Po Town to get answers. Mallow and Kiawe reluctantly agreed, but the former suggested asking Ilima and Acerola to help them.

In A Raid and Po Town, Mallow, Kiawe, Lana, Acerola, Ilima, and Hau arrived at Po Town. Their presence alerted Team Skull's boss, Guzma, who demanded to know why his base was being invaded. When the Captains revealed they only wanted to talk, Guzma agreed on the condition they made it to him first. He then summoned a Pheromosa, Celesteela, and Guzzlord and had them attack the Captains and Hau. Despite their best efforts, Mallow and the others were completely outmatched by the rampaging beasts.

In Confusion and Monsters from Another World, Sun arrived at Po Town, only to get caught up in the commotion. Annoyed the Captains were still fighting, Guzma revealed a Cosmog and had it open more wormholes. Gladion appeared, demanding to know where Guzma got the Cosmog and Ultra Beasts from. Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his Gladion. To everyone's shock, Gladion also revealed the Aether Foundation's president, Lusamine, was the one who gave Guzma Cosmog as part of her plan to create a paradise filled with nothing but Ultra Beasts and herself. Eventually, the beasts broke out of Po Town's barrier, allowing them to wreak havoc on all of Ula'ula Island. Mallow and the other Captains headed off to various locations to evacuate any innocent civilians caught in the beasts' attacks.

Pokémon
In Adventure in the Dark Dimension, the Trial Captains and island kahunas were revealed to have spent six months on Exeggutor Island training to prepare for another clash with the Ultra Beasts. After their training was finished, Sophocles and Molayne took everyone to Mount Lanakila, where a wormhole had opened up earlier. Shortly after they arrived, their ship was attacked by a group of Aether Foundation Employees and their Ultra Beasts. With the Z-Moves they had acquired, Mallow and the others managed to defeat the Ultra Beasts.

Mallow (Japanese: マオ Mao) is one of the Captains of Akala Island whose trial takes place at Lush Jungle. She specializes in Grass-type Pokémon.

According to her appearance in Pokémon Masters EX, based on her core series appearance, she was born on Akala as well.[7]

While Mallow appears in all Alola-based games in Generation VII, her battles are notably version exclusive. Kiawe or Lana will fill her battling roles if she is unavailable.

Appearance

Captain Mallow has pockets and bags used for storing ingredients. She is taller than Elio.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Mallow's appearance in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon is similar to that of Sun and Moon, however some differences occur, providing further context of certain situations and appears mroe frequently.

Story

Noticing that the food left over wasn't finished by Lurantis, Mallow offers the remaining food to her friends, who are off put by the spicy taste that the Mallow Special provides, keeping the rest of it to give to Olivia later.

In order to make the player keep what they just saw a secret, MallowUS/LanaUM challenges the player to a battle. After which, Mallow gives the player a Green Petal as a part of the trial. She and Lana will offer to escort the player to Wela Volcano Park to meet Kiawe and get the next petal from him.

Pokémon

Mallow's Pokémon are kept in Ultra Balls. She has a preference for Grass-Type Pokémon.

Revealing his true aim is to destroy Ultra Beasts, Gladion battled the beasts Guzma summoned with his Type: Null.
