Pokémon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction (Japanese: 破壊とディアンシー The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie) is the first XY series movie and the seventeenth Pokémon movie overall. It was released in Japan on July 19, 2014 and premiered in the United States on Cartoon Network on November 8, 2014.

The first trailer for the film was shown at the end of M16, containing Xerneas, Yveltal, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Its preliminary title was first revealed by CoroCoro on December 15, 2013. The CoroCoro issue released in February 2014 revealed that the Legendary Pokémon Diancie would also have a starring role in the film.

In addition to Xerneas, Yveltal, and Diancie, the film prominently features several Mega Evolutions. Among them is the debut of Mega Diancie ahead of its release in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. It was featured in Japanese theaters with the Pikachu short Pikachu, What's This Key?.

Can Ash and his friends help Diancie discover its true power, stop Yveltal’s rampage, and save the Diamond Domain?

201

Ash and Pikachu attempt to help a Diancie find the life-giving Pokémon Xerneas and encounter a strange cocoon, where the Destruction Pokémon, Yveltal, lies in wait.

After losing to Astrid's Mega Absol, Ash encounters a Diancie pursued by 2 mercenaries and helps her flee to safety. After the battle she reveals she was being hunted down by said mercenaries (Merylin with her Delphox, and Riot with his Greninja) for her ability to make diamonds. Team Rocket successfully captures her at a restaurant and seemingly bathe in riches at an old clock tower. But their riches were not to last, because after a short time, the diamonds fade, leaving Team Rocket broke. She was rescued by a Chesnaught and Millis.

The next day the group travels to a shopping mall, where Diancie is mysteriously being followed by 3 Carbink. After shopping, they encounter Merylin and her Delphox. Ash holds her off while the others flee to safety in the woods using a Rhyhorn, but were ambushed by Riot and Greninja with his Water Shuriken, and was saved by the same 3 Carbink, revealed to be her protectors. They return to the Diamond Domain, where the Heart Diamond is weakening and crumbling apart. The elder tells of Yveltal as the Cocoon of Destruction and how he destroyed nearly the entire forest. Back in the woods, they were ambushed by Argus and Millis, Riot, and Merylin, while Team Rocket was in the shadows. In the heat of the battle, Ash and Diancie fall into a lake, where he accidentally awakens Yveltal, the Cocoon of Destruction. Diancie manages to make it back to the group, but is captured by Argus. Chesnaught tries to battle Yveltal, but his Oblivion Wing got the best of him, and gets turned to stone, along with Team Rocket, the mercenaries and Argus and Millis. Diancie tries to stop him with the Heart Diamond, but Yveltal overcomes it with his Oblivion Wing and turns the 3 Carbink into stone. Diancie blames herself for causing all this, while Pikachu tries to hold Yveltal off with his Thunderbolt. After a flashback with Xerneas in the forest, she mega-evolves into Mega Diancie. She unleashes a more powerful version of her Heart Diamond, successfully countering Yveltal. But as "gratitude" Argus and Millis try to kill Yveltal, but he petrifies them, making them fall. Just as he was about to exterminate Ash, Xerneas arrives and tries to calm him down. She succeeds, and he flies away, restoring the waters. Pikachu was fatally wounded and dies in stone because of Yveltal's Oblivion Wing. Driven to tears, Ash mourns for him. Xerneas revives Pikachu and everybody petrified by sacrificing her life energy. But in the process, she turns into a tree, as she is finally at peace, and reassures Diancie that what she's witnessing is the process of life and the beginning of hope.Back at the Diamond Domain, Diancie restores the cave with her new Heart Diamond. Bonnie takes out the diamond that Diancie made her back a few days ago. She asks Diancie to keep it, as a symbol of friendship between the two.

In Japan, players could receive a Darkrai via a serial code, after purchasing a pre-order ticket at a Pokémon Center store as well as other retail stores from April 19 to July 19, 2014. Players had until September 30, 2014 to redeem their code. The serial code only worked on Japanese region games.

Movie distributions

Diancie distribution artwork

In Japan, Diancie was distributed at theaters which screen the movie across Japan, which occurred from July 19 to September 30, 2014. It also was distributed at a pre-showing of the movie on July 6, 2014, which was only open to select people. Like all other local Generation VI events, this event was not region-locked; any player regardless of region and language were able to receive Diancie.

Trivia

  • Director Kunihiko Yuyama traveled to Canada to scout out locations for the settings of this film.
  • This is the first movie to have its dub title revealed before its Japanese release.
  • This movie has more human antagonists than any other movie, with four.
  • While other movies have featured in-person cameos of Champions and Frontier Brains, this is the first film that features an in-person cameo of an Elite Four member.
  • Had An Undersea Place to Call Home! not been delayed from airing, this movie would have featured the first appearance of Ash's Hawlucha, as the episode where it was caught would not have aired until after the movie's release.
  • This is the first movie in which Ash and his friends encounter Team Rocket since Giratina and the Sky Warrior, which also aired on July 19th, coincidentally.

Dub edits

  • Similar to the first three Pokémon movies, the vast majority of the film's soundtrack has been rescored with dub-exclusive music.
  • In the initial television airing of this film, the following edits are made:
    • Extensive scene cutting to shorten the film's runtime.
    • The opening theme song does not have any lyrics, and the scenes featured during it are fully voiced.
