Kalos Lumiose City Map.png
Location of Lumiose City in Kalos.

Lumiose City (Japanese: ミアレシティ Miare City) is a large city nestled in the north-central part of the Kalos region. Standing in the center of the city is the Prism Tower, which serves as its symbol. The wide roadways are paved with brick and cobblestone, allowing both automobile and Gogoat traffic safe and easy travel. Lumiose City is the largest city in the Pokémon world.

Places of interest

Prism Tower

Main article: Lumiose Gym

Prism Tower is a large tower located in Centrico Plaza in the middle of Lumiose City. It houses the Lumiose City Gym. Prism Tower is based on the real-world Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. It can be fought on in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U.

North Boulevard

Lumiose Galettes

A small shop located amongst the tall buildings on the North Boulevard where the player can purchase Lumiose Galettes for $100 ($80 if the player is more stylish) for one hour starting at 3 am, 9 am, 3 pm and 9 pm. Once per day upon purchasing, the player will also receive a Moomoo Milk. Once the player reaches a certain level of stylishness they can purchase Lumiose Galette any time of day.

Lumiose Museum

Main article: Lumiose Museum

A large, white building that houses many paintings of people and locations in the Pokémon World. Entrance is free, but audio guides are available for $200 (Once the player reaches a certain level of stylishness, the audio guides become free).

Hotel Richissime

Main article: Hotel Richissime

A large, black building located on the North Boulevard, serving as a luxury hotel. Each day, the player can complete specific tasks in the hotel to receive money.

Battle Institute

Main article: Battle Institute

The Battle Institute (Japanese: トライアルハウス Trial House) on the North Boulevard works in the same way as the one in Nimbasa City in Unova. The player can opt for a Battle Test (five consecutive single or double battles) or a Download Test (which can be downloaded either wirelessly or via Wi-Fi at certain time, similar to event Pokémon). The player can win BP here.

Lumiose Station

A very large train station located on the far eastern half of the North Boulevard. Upon defeating the Elite Four and becoming the Champion, Professor Sycamore will meet the player here and give them the TMV Pass which allows them to board the train to Kiloude City.

Looker Bureau

Looker's headquarters during the post-game storyline are located in a narrow street between North Boulevard and Rouge Plaza. It is initially empty, but Looker settles in after the player enters the Hall of Fame and upgrades the Mega Ring.

After completing all the Looker Bureau chapters, the player can battle Emma in the Expansion Suit (as Essentia) here on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

South Boulevard

PR Video Studio

A purple building on the South Boulevard where Trainer PR Videos are filmed. PR Videos filmed here can be shared with passers-by and people who have been given the player's Nintendo 3DS friend code.

Sycamore Pokémon Lab

Professor Sycamore's Pokémon research lab is located directly opposite Vernal Avenue. It is here where the player can receive either Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle upon defeating Professor Sycamore in a Pokémon Battle early in the game, as well as their corresponding Mega Stone. After the player enters the Hall of Fame, they can return to the lab to get the Poké Radar from one of the scientists in the lab.

Coiffure Clips

A small hair dressing salon located opposite the Route 5 entrance. The player can have their hair colored and styled here. More styling options become available once the player reaches a certain level of stylishness.

Autumnal Avenue

Poké Ball Boutique

A specialty shop that specializes in different kinds of Poké Balls. It is notably the only location in any Pokémon game where Premier Balls are sold individually.

Juice Shoppe

292Shedinja.png The contents of this section have been suggested to be split into Juice Shoppe.
Please discuss it on the talk page for this section.

A specialty shop that sells juices made from Berries. Available from the man on the left are pre-made juices whose selection list changes each day. They can have various effects on the Pokémon drinking the juice, ranging from increasing Effort Values or level. If the Pokémon already has maximum value on the particular stat, the juice will increase its happiness instead. By looking at the price of the juice, the player may determine intensity of the effects. For example, a Purple Juice priced at $1,500 will increase HP EVs of the Pokémon by 15, or a Rare Soda priced at $20,000 will increase level of the Pokémon by two.

Name Effect Combination
Colorful Shake Increases happiness Any two different colored berries
Rare Soda Increases level by 1 to 4 1 Lansat Berry + 1 Starf Berry
Ultra Rare Soda Increases level by 4 to 5 1 Roseli Berry + 1 Enigma Berry
Purple Juice Increases HP EV by 4 to 32 Two purple berries
Red Juice Increases Attack EV by 4 to 32 Two red berries
Yellow Juice Increases Defense EV by 4 to 32 Two yellow berries
Blue Juice Increases Special Attack EV by 4 to 32 Two blue berries
Green Juice Increases Special Defense EV by 4 to 32 Two green berries
Pink Juice Increases Speed EV by 4 to 32 Two pink berries
Perilous Soup Resets EVs to 0 1 Kee Berry + 1 Maranga Berry

From the lady on the right, custom-blend juices are made for free by mixing two chosen Berries from the player's bag. Different color berries yield different results. When two berries of the same color are mixed together, they will become a <Color> Juice that increases a stat by 4-32 EVs. The intensity of the effects can be determined by the berries used, and which group(s) the berries belong to.

There are three berry groups, each consisting of several same or different colored berries that have similar properties to one another. The simplest way to find out a berry's grouping is by mixing two of the same berry together. If a berry mixed with itself results in a 4, 8 or 12 EV increase, the berry will belong to either group 1, group 2 or group 3 respectively.

For example, when two Leppa berries are mixed together, they will produce a Red Juice that will increase the drinker's Attack Stat by 4 EVs. Likewise, when two Maranga berries are mixed together, they will produce a Blue juice that will increase the drinker's Speed by 12 EVs. Thus a Leppa Berry is a Group 1 berry and a Maranga Berry is a Group 3 berry.

When berries from the same color, but different groups are mixed, the intensities are more widely varied. A group 1 berry mixed with a group 2 berry will result in a 16 EV increase, but a group 1 and group 3 berry mix only results in a 12 EV increase.

Group 1 Group 2 Group 3
Group 1 4-8 16 12
Group 2 16 8-16 32
Group 3 12 32 12-32

Note that each type of juices can be bought/made only once a day. Saving before speaking with the man to the left, and then Soft-resetting will change the list of juices he sells. Juices cannot be kept, so they must be given to a Pokémon in the player's party right away. If the player mixes berries at the right counter, but decides against giving it to a Pokémon, the female clerk will drink the juice instead, thanking the player for the drink. Both variants of Rare Soda will result in the drinker's level increasing, however all moves learned or evolution via level up will not be invoked.

Estival Avenue

A pre-release screenshot of Estival Avenue

Loto-ID Center

Main article: Pokémon Lottery Corner

A shop located on Estival Avenue. Each day, the player may participate in a lottery draw, and prizes are granted depending on how many digits from a randomly generated ID number match those of any Pokémon in the player's possession.

Lumiose Press

A building located next to the Loto-ID Center on Estival Avenue. Viola's sister, Alexa, will recommend various locations around the city for the player to visit, and offers to take them there.

Vernal Avenue

Friseur Furfrou

A shop on Vernal Avenue that specializes in Furfrou haircuts. They initially offer Star, Diamond and Heart Trims. As the player progresses, more trims that become available are the La Reine, Kabuki, Pharaoh, Debutante, Matron and Dandy Trims. In addition, they can have the Furfrou return to its natural look. The cost is $500 for any style. The haircut is visible at any time.

Herboriste

A specialty shop that sells herbal medicines.

Stone Emporium

A specialty shop that sells evolutionary stones. A man in the store will offer to sell the player the remaining Mega Stones for the two Kanto starter Pokémon they did not receive from Professor Sycamore. The prices of the Mega Stones begin at $1,000,000, but they decrease, depending on the player's stylishness. From the initial $1,000,000, the price drops to $500,000, $300,000, $150,000, $100,000, $70,000, $50,000, and finally $10,000. Once the player buys the first Mega Stone, the man will not offer the second Mega Stone until after the player has defeated the Elite Four.

Boutique Couture

A designer fashion and luxury boutique. The first floor sells only women's clothing, whereas the second floor sells only men's clothing. The player is only granted access to the boutique once their stylishness reaches a certain level. The clothes and accessories are sold here for a much higher price than those sold at the other boutiques across Kalos. A lady in the store mentions to the player that there is a special Discount Coupon that can be used at the store, which can be obtained with Poké Miles. From January 14 to March 3, 2014, this coupon was made available to players for free on the Pokémon Global Link website. It can only be obtained and used once.

Restaurants

Main article: Lumiose City restaurants

Lumiose City has four restaurants located on South Boulevard, Autumnal Avenue, Hibernal Avenue, and near Rogue Plaza. At each restaurant, the player can pay to be served a meal where the server will battle the player before each course. After finishing a meal, the player will receive a reward: a number of some valuable item, depending on which restaurant the player is in and how well they did.

Lysandre Café

Artwork of Calem riding the Gogoat Shuttle

A red café located near Magenta Plaza. It grants the player access to Lysandre Labs, one of Team Flare's hideouts in the Kalos region. Despite the small size, it serves as an important location in both the main plot line and the after story sideline plot with Xerosic.

Lumi Cab

A taxi service with stops located all around Lumiose City. They enable the player to travel directly to certain locations around the city. The base fare is $710, but it increases the further away from their destination the player is. Once the player reaches a certain level of stylishness, the driver will start giving a 50% discount on the fare. If the player does not have enough money to pay for the ride, the driver will challenge them to a battle. The driver the player battles depends on which taxi the player chooses.

Style

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.

Within Lumiose City, the player has a degree of style with a system of points. Style can be raised by shopping in stores, battling in restaurants, and participating in activities within the city. More style will lower shop prices, add more items and services, offer more trims in Friseur Furfrou, and allow access to Boutique Couture. If the player is female, two extra hairstyles (Ponytail and Pigtails) are also unlocked.

High style

When the player has high style, they are awarded certain privileges and benefits around Lumiose City, including:

Main article: Prism Tower (stage)

Prism Tower, Lumiose City's prominent landmark, appears as a stage in the Nintendo 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U.

Lumiose City in the anime

Ash arrived in Lumiose City with Alexa in Kalos, Where Dreams and Adventures Begin! as his first destination of the Kalos region. Ash wanted to challenge the Gym there, but he was denied access due to not having enough Kalos badges by the Clembot. He fell several feet, then he was saved by Clemont and Bonnie. This is also where Ash had his first Kalos battle using Pikachu against Clemont's Bunnelby until the battle was interrupted by Team Rocket trying to capture Pikachu. They were nearly successful until the group was saved by a wild Froakie, who was injured in the process, needing immediate treatment. Bonnie suggested taking Froakie to Professor Sycamore's lab.

Trivia

  • A woman beside Café Bataille explains that the two Skiddo in front of Lumiose Station were abandoned by their Trainer, and wait by the station for his return. This is a possible reference to the story of Hachikō, an Akita dog who waited at the train station every day for his owner's return, even after his unexpected death. The story is a popular legend in Japanese culture.
  • If the player enters Lumiose City and gets on their bicycle, the music does not change.
  • At the Magenta Plaza Pokémon Center, a young man mentions Team Plasma "making news a while back in the Unova region," while a young woman mentions Professor Oak's grandson having visited Kalos to study abroad. She also tells how he used to say "Bonjour" while meeting and "Smell ya later!" while leaving. The first quote refers to the way how Blue greets the player while visiting S.S. Anne in the original Generation I games and their remakes, while the latter one was used whenever he left the player's presence.
  • The four avenues are named after words pertaining to each of the four seasons: Estival (Summer), Autumnal (Autumn), Hibernal (Winter), and Vernal (Spring).
  • The five plazas are named after French words corresponding to their color: Rouge (red), Bleu (blue), Vert (green), Magenta (magenta), and Jaune (yellow).
  • The architecture style of Lumiose City is very similar to its real counterpart. Paris itself consists mostly of buildings dating back up to several centuries and the outskirts (also called the Parisian suburbs) were recently urbanized, dating back to the 1960s.
  • Similarly to Paris, Lumiose City has roads connecting to all parts of Kalos. The only difference is that Paris' connections to all parts of France are used by railroads.
    • The layout of the city is also extremely similar to the area of Paris surrounding the Arc de Triomphe.
  • On the second floor of the Fighting Dojo, a Hex Maniac will appear, say "No, you're not the one," and float away. The purpose of this in-game event, if there is one, is not known yet.
  • Behind the second TMV timetable in Lumiose Station, some words are written saying "I'm going to go for help. Wait in the usual place."
  • The shape and colors of the plazas closely resemble the logo of the Battle Frontier in Generation IV.
  • Lumiose City has more Pokémon Centers than any other city, with three.
  • The Mega Stones for the Kanto starter Pokémon sold at the Stone Emporium are the most expensive purchasable items in the Pokémon games, costing $1,000,000 originally. Some items have been listed for the same price in previous games, but they have not been purchasable since that price was specifically chosen in those instances to be $1 more than the player could hold.

Glitches

Map of Lumiose City by Nintendo indicating areas unsafe to load saves in
Main article: Lumiose City save glitch

At the time of release of Pokémon X and Y, many players reported being unable to move after loading a save within Lumiose City. According to Nintendo.com, if the player saves the game in certain areas of Lumiose City, then ends the game, the controls will not respond when the saved game is reloaded. They provided a map indicating known areas where the glitch can occur, which includes the entire outer boulevards. On October 25, 2013, Nintendo released a patch for this glitch via the Nintendo eShop.

Origin

Lumiose City and Prism Tower are based on Paris and the Eiffel Tower respectively.
