Lillie (Japanese: リーリエ Lilie) is a friend and classmate of Ash at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island. She made her debut in Alola to New Adventure!.

History

Lillie made her anime debut in Alola to New Adventure! when Ash stumbled upon the Melemele Island's Pokémon School, calling out in vain to warn him about being trampled by her classmates' Tauros. After checking to see if Ash was hurt, she quickly showed her fear of Pokémon when she cowered behind him upon being approached by one of the Tauros, only to be startled by his Pikachu. In The Guardian's Challenge, after Ash enrolled in the school and showed his new classmates the Z-Ring he had received from Tapu Koko, Lillie explained the guardian deity's fickle and mischievous nature to him.

Lillie is a polite and kindhearted girl who is concerned with the well-being of others. While she never takes physical action, she is quick to warn people of imminent danger. However, her attempts to explain the danger before it happens winds up distracting those she is trying to help, which does more harm than good.

One of Lillie's most prominent traits in the anime is her fear of physically interacting with Pokémon. She has a tendency to freeze up whenever a Pokémon enters her personal space; in SM005, she goes so far as wearing a full suit of diving gear to avoid making contact with Pokémon during a fishing class. When other characters point out her fear, she stubbornly denies it by saying she simply avoids Pokémon entirely by choice.

Despite this, Lillie enjoys studying Pokémon from a researcher's perspective, and is comfortable with observing them from a safe distance. She is extremely knowledgeable about the behavior, types, and background of Alola's native Pokémon species and regional variants, including guardian deities such as Tapu Koko. However, she appears to know little about Pokémon in other regions, as seen when she expresses surprise that Exeggutor—a Dragon-type in Alola—is a Psychic-type elsewhere.
