Route 40 is a route in Johto and the first water route Trainers from New Bark Town come in contact with.

Route description

File:Johto Battle Frontier.png

This route consists of a small amount of land that is dwarfed in proportion by the surrounding ocean. All that a Trainer must do is head south, towards the Whirl Islands, defeating a few Trainers along the way. The Pokémon selection in this route is equally bland, comprising only of the most commonly appearing sea route Pokémon: Tentacool and Tentacruel.

However, in Pokémon Crystal, the Battle Tower will be on this route, giving Trainers much more to do after defeating the sixteen Gym Leaders of the game. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Battle Tower returns, joined by 4 other facilities in the series' third Battle Frontier. The Battle Frontier found here is nearly identical to the one found in the Sinnoh Region.

Monica appears on the beach on Mondays and gives a Sharp Beak to the player the first time he or she talks to her, and an Alert Ribbon the second time and all times after (Generation IV only).
